I am on a roll! I got a couple of days off and so I managed to get some serious drawing done. I decided to draw Moana from, well, Moana. I still hear “Vaiana” in my head from watching the French version lol. 

Admittedly, I’ve never been the biggest Disney fan, especially when it comes to princesses. I did find Moana’s character very refreshing though and I like drawing her. Especially all that gorgeous curly hair (though I’ll never call my own curly mess gorgeous. Curly hair sucks lol). I’m thinking about maybe drawing Mulan next (girl power, yeah!)

the last hawaiian princess, princess ka’iulani of Hawai’i (october 16, 1875 - march 6, 1899)

She fought so hard for her people, carrying the weight of her changing world, until her spirit just grew too tired. History says she caught a fever after riding in the rain, but those who knew her said the loss of her kingdom was what truly broke her.

Sometimes, the world feels too heavy, and the grief in our own chests feels too massive to carry alone. I think I felt compelled to share her story today because, in a way, it makes the quiet ache of a broken heart feel a little less lonely. If a princess could be undone by the depth of what she felt, then maybe it's okay that the rest of us sometimes feel entirely broken by love and loss, too.

Sending a quiet thought of peace to her memory, and to anyone else carrying a heavy heart today 🤍

Remembering that time in 2nd grade when we had to make presentations about folk tales and fables and everyone picked basically what we had read in class but I went off about a tale of a Hawaiian princess who was fleeing from her cruel husband-to-be and hide by a lake but the man saw the reflection of her fan in the water and killed her in a rage so now every year the lake turns to blood to honor the princess that was killed. I’ll never forget the look on the teachers face. My parents loved it.

Princess Victoria Ka'iulani & the downfall of her country Princess Victoria Ka'iulani is a native Hawaiian, born to a Scottish father and an Hawaiian mother. During her teens, just after her mother passed away and tensions between the American residents and the natives began to rise, Ka'iulani was sent away to Britain for her studies, followed by her half-sister Annie. While she was away, the King died and her aunt, Queen Lydia, took over the country. Ka'iulani was named Lydia's heir to the throne. However, conflicts began to grow, as the Americans wanted to annex Hawaii to America in order to profit from its luxurious trading items. The US citizens succeeded in overthrowing the monarchy while Victoria was in Britain. Her half-sister decides to return to Hawaii as the 17 year old princess made her way to Washington DC. There, she spoke with many people, including the president, in order to stop the annexation of her country. However, the young princess was extremely weak a majority of the time and struggled against severe migraines and worsening eye problems. While in DC, many of Ka'iulani's closest companions died, including her half-sister Annie, causing her health to decline. In the end, the president wasn't able to stop the annexation of Hawaii and Ka'iulani was left without a nation to rule. Ka'iulani returned home to Hawaii, where her health began to decline. Soon after returning home, she died from inflammatory rheumatism,p at the tender age of 23. She was Hawaii's last princess.
