not the kind of thing i was expecting to find on my "it's 7pm, i think i can go outside without the sun cooking me to death" walk, this sleepy striped hawkmoth (Hyles livornica) was not budging no matter how close i got. unfortunately neither was the gorse, so there was still a barrier of sorts between us

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

If it looks like a hummingbird, and flies like a hummingbird, it might just be a hummingbird hawk-moth! Like their namesake, hummingbird hawk moths can beat their wings incredibly fast- up to 90 times per second! This allows it to hover and perform tight aerial manuvers. In addition, they have a very long proboscis, which allows it to sip nectar from deep-welled flowers that other insects can't access.

White-lined Sphinx moth found and photographed in Albuquerque NM. Also known as the hummingbird moth.

This one happens to be a favorite of someone I knew a long time ago but don’t know anymore.

I didn’t get a good image with its pink coloration so here’s the wikipedia image so y’all can see it with open wings.

Tobacco hornworm — Manduca sexta 🐛

Often confused with the tomato hornworm—the tobacco hornworm has 7 diagonal stripes along with a red posterior horn, while the tomato hornworm has 8 stripes and a blueish-black posterior horn. 🍅
