you flip through what seems to be one of will's old notebooks, passed on to jane so that she can learn from his own journey through the number system. sitting among crumpled loose leaf and other secondhand notebooks ( all the boys: mike, dustin, lucas ) is a math textbook that you think might be a bit advanced for where you plan to start from, but it speaks to what jim believes jane is capable of with the right guidance.

i wake up early, before the mist lifts off the waterfalls, and find dad down by the fire pit, the smell of coffee already drifting through the trees. i sit on the log across from him, close enough to feel the warmth. i never want to miss another morning with him. It’s quiet in a good way. no sacrifices, no shouting, no monsters. “i like it here,” i tell him quietly, watching the smoke curl into the morning air. and then even softer, “do you think this will be enough?" or will they all slowly leave me? after all, i'm the only one sentenced to hiding.

"  though  with  age  came  a  much  more  subtle  approach  in  his  opinion,  nearly  galled  at  the  sound  of  their  stampeding  feet  as  they  moved  in  tight  nit  pack.

Karen was well aware that Mike and Jane were often found out together, at the Wheelers', or at Hopper's place where she lived with Jim. Karen recognized it easily as young love and remembered it all too well when she started falling for Ted-- mind you that circumstances were different and things eventually never panned out as well as she hoped, but.. she'd been in the throes of it before. She just hoped the two kids were being smart about it and not centering the lives around it. Though... she'd be lying if she said she didn't notice how often they were together. In the last week, Karen had made it a point to tell Mike to tell Jim that she wished to speak with him... maybe have dinner as the two families. Mike had protested, but Karen insisted. Which is exactly what led to @hawk1nshero being at her dining table well after Mike and Jane wandered off to the basement, Holly in tow. Which is the only reason that Jim seemed okay with them going off together.

"You know," Karen started as she finished topping off her wine-- less than halfway through the fresh opened red, "I think they could last beyond whatever this is for them." She's mostly teasing, she can tell it's a sore/odd subject for Jim.
