“You really can’t take a hit, can you?” for Bethany x Alistair?

“Take off your armor,” Bethany ordered.

Alistair found himself complying before he considered the request. “Wait, what? Now? Here?” The raiders would be upon the ship any moment, she couldn’t possibly mean for them to—

“If you go overboard in that skirt, you’ll drown in it,” she growled. His hands continued to hesitate on the clasps while he considered that she might not want him to drown. “Have you ever seen a pirate in plate armor?” she hissed.

How many pirates had she seen locked up in the Circle as she was? She had a point, though. And very little patience, because while he continued to gawp at her, she began unbuckling his pauldrons, pieces of metal clanging to the deck.

They both stumbled at the next sound—a boom and the cracking of wood as a cannonball hit the side of the boat. Alistair caught Bethany before she went flying across the deck, but she lost her staff and they both groaned as it flipped right over the railing and into the water.

Alistair had a feeling they’d be joining it soon enough.

A rogue barrel knocked him flat on his back, and Bethany took the opportunity to pull off his sabatons and toss them. Fiercely efficient in disrobing, that one, and now was not the time to admire her focus.

He got back on his feet, noticeably lighter without the armor, and noticeably lacking in anything that would prevent him being skewered from the pirates who now boarded their sinking ship.

“What is the plan now?” he hissed at Bethany.  

“I don’t know, don’t die? I guess?”

That seemed less and less likely as a grinning madman approached them. Alistair did not care for how he was looking at Bethany, and he placed himself between them, sword out, shield in the ocean somewhere, boat rocking beneath his feet.

This, at least, was familiar.

A feint to his left, then Alistair lunged just as the boat lurched again. He stumbled, his sword connected with his foe’s, and the man threw an elbow that knocked Alistair from his feet.

Maker’s balls, if this was how it was going to go, he was very, very dead.

“You really can’t take a hit, can you,” Bethany huffed somewhere above him.  

Now that didn’t feel fair. Normally he had on thirty pounds of armor and all he really had to do was brace himself against a floor that wasn’t moving.

He didn’t have time to protest, however. Bethany shoved the man away with the weakest force spell ever summoned. Alistair popped to his feet again, still dancing on the deck as he tried to find his balance, but if her magic was trickling in, they had a shot at survival.

“We jump,” she said.

Or not.

“What?”

“That’s the plan. We jump and we swim. Can you swim?”

The boat didn’t wait for an answer. A sharp turn had them both skidding across the deck, pirate close behind. Bethany got an arm around him, and then they were both crashing toward the icy water.

😡 a paragraph/section that gave me a lot of trouble Can I point to the most current problem? I’m currently stuck on Lost Templar at that moment where the dragon drops off Corypheus and he does his ass long villain speech and then the trebuchet and the second avalanche and the fucking dragon not even once breathing fire, what the fuck?, and falling into some underground section that was never mentioned before... it’s all such a mess and honestly, it reads boring as fuck. I’m not sure what to do with it, I might have to skip it.

👉 a WIP i’d like to try and finish next year? God, I wish I could finish Lost Templar over the next year. Not because I’m sick of it but because I never wanted it to become a giant epic. It was meant to be a short character study, watching Carver grow as he is finally given the responsibilities he always craved and then of course being annoyed by them. And what did I do with that? A full on DA:I rewrite. This was never meant to happen.
