It makes no sense that the reason Katniss ‘chose’ Peeta and not Gale is because she’s too similar to Gale. Because she isn’t. Katniss is nothing like Gale, not in the way she seems to think she is. She doesn’t want further struggle, she killed Coin because she knew another Games would be destructive and revenge-fuelled; she wasn’t seeking vengeance, or simmering in vitriol, unlike Gale, who wanted to hit back in the way others had hit him. It’s Katniss’s own self-consciousness that causes her to think she’s angry and vengeful when she isn’t, because deep down, all Katniss ever wanted was peace with her family, to hunt and forage unseen within the woods.

Katniss is able to find her own calm, all within herself. She doesn’t need Peeta for it, because she’s beautiful and forgiving even when she thinks she isn’t. She’s forgiving in the way she let Gale go when she realised his bomb may have killed her sister. She let him go, she didn’t seek revenge, nor attack him, nor yell at him. She was able to accept the fact and move on from it, by herself. She’s incredible. She didn’t kill Snow, even though that would have been the sweetest revenge. She saw him as someone on the brink of death and let him go, aiming her arrow at Coin instead. She may think she’s angry, but what she wanted was for it to all be over.

Katniss wasn’t like Gale. He didn’t want it to be over, he had a fight wreaking havoc in his bones, while Katniss’s bones were hollowed out from fighting, and when it was over, she was able to find herself again. Gale wasn’t, because the fight was him. Katniss wanted to run away with their families, not fight, even when she knew about the rebellion. When Gale found out, he immediately changed his mind and wanted to join.

Gale’s the one who is cold and angry. Katniss is caring and wants the best for people. She doesn’t need Peeta to teach her how to be caring. She’s not similar to Gale, and she doesn’t need Peeta. She wanted a peaceful life, a life she gave herself.

(Basically, I think Katniss is aroace, don’t argue or I’ll throw hands–)

Next, remember how Katniss thought along the lines of, “I like revenge and I’m fiery like Gale,” and, “Peeta’s calmness and peace would be perfect for me, I’m like Gale.”

Clearly, Katniss ain’t the revenge seeking one, that’s Gale. She literally said, Gale. Can I make this any clearer, she said, a personality like Gale’s and a personality like Peeta’s would be perfect together– so put Gale and Peeta together then?! Gale is the one who needs Peeta to represent moving on and growing, Katniss already represents moving on and growing. She overcame her struggles with herself, and with friends like Haymitch, Rue, Madge, Cinna, Effie… (even the dead are remembered in her mind, and they will always be with her). Friendship supremacy. Let Gale and Peeta be the inferior lovers. To be friends with someone is worth more than lovers, and they had that friendship with Katniss, but they threw it away for something less, so be it. Now they must be lovers together. Cursed for eternity.

Katniss and her best friends, Peeta and Gale, who hate each other. Which sucks, obviously, because they’re both her best friends, so what’s she gonna do now? Does she actually have to stand there while they shuffle awkwardly and try not to make eye contact? They’ll just pretend the other doesn’t exist, which means Katniss has to hang out with both of them separately, and no offence to Peeta or Gale, but she does have other parts of her life to get to, so.

Their petty rivalry is making her tired. Katniss, learning to love herself, figures that things which drain her energy just won’t do.

The solution? Forced proximity. It’s not that toxic. Probably. She’ll just keep putting Peeta and Gale in random, awkward situations, stuck with only each other for prolonged periods of time, and see how that goes. They’ll eventually get along. They have to at some point. Probably…

And when they stare at each other, finally, Katniss knows it’s because they wanna be friends SO bad.

Then they’re all best friends. Who live together. Forever.

The reason Gale and Peeta would be the greatest enemies to lovers is because they were never really enemies.

They want to hate each other. They’re jealous of each other, but it’s so hard to hate when they can recognise that they’re both doing their best in a world where children get sentenced to death, and poor Districts must run themselves dry for the Capitol. Gale and Peeta admire each other, and wish they didn’t, which distances their relationship. So as soon as they’re forced to work together and get over that distance, it’d actually go pretty well, because there’s mutual respect there. Practically, they could just get the job done and go their separate ways. But isn’t it difficult to find someone you can work so well with? In companionable silence where you trust the other knows exactly what they’re doing? You don’t need to speak, you already know.

Gale and Peeta, who both love Katniss so much, so obviously it’s romance. They’ll do anything to keep her from death. How is that not true love? Like, who would do that for ‘just friends’? Clearly, they have to be ‘more than that,’ right? (No. No, they don’t. See, in life or death scenarios, like THG, people are gonna confuse their strong platonic feelings for romantic ones. I mean, people do it all the time even now, you know, amatonormativity; the source of all evil.)

And heteronormativity because she’s a girl and they’re boys so what else could it possibly be? Gotta be romance. (No. Just: no.)

So when Katniss picks neither of them, because no way does she need either of them to survive, they’ll overthink, ‘Is something wrong with me?’ Gale always thought that Peeta was better than him. Kinder. Nicer smile. Peeta always thought Gale was closer to her. Stronger. Tougher mind. They’re both rejected, and dejected, and there’s Peeta’s method of avoiding Katniss, and Gale’s tendency of lashing out. Katniss gets repulsed by Gale’s anger, and Peeta feels sympathy for him.

Gale is a hot-headed explosion and Peeta is a charismatic puppy…
