A RIVER MEADOW IN OLD VERMONT.
This sort of scene is very common in Vermont, about the middle of the summer,—it is so common, in fact, that most home photographers take no notice of it; but we reck there are those who are mighty glad to take a look at this picture, and to such it speaks volumes. Aside from the harmonious placing of the picture, the old horse is to come in for mention. Old, assuredly,—past 31 years, and yet able and willing to earn a dinner. Old Dolly is the property of Mr. F. P. Billings, of White River. She is of Morgan blood, stands only 14 hands and one inch high, weighs 950 pounds, and is practically sound as a bullet. Mr. Billings purchased Dollie in Bridgewater the spring she was five years old, for $ 130 and she has been in the family ever since. This horse, with another of the same type, did all the plowing, mowing and teamwork for many years on a farm of 256 acres, cutting at times 100 tons of hay, and raising fifteen acres of corn. Since 1897 her work has been lighter but she has been in harness nearly every day. In her day Dollie was as handsome as anyone could wish, could road eight miles an hour, was true and kind, and rarely afraid of anything. She will have good care as long as she lives.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE SOLD PAINTINGS - NEXT: JULIEN DUPRÉ (1851 - 1910) Faneuse Oil on canvas 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches Signed and dated 1881 https://rehs.com/Julien_Dupr%C3%A9_Faneuse.html "Faneuse" is a beautiful example of Dupré's style, showcasing his ability to capture the essence of the French countryside. The painting features a woman in a blue and red outfit working in the fields. She is using a large pitchfork to gather up the wheat. In the background, another harvester is hard at work, while the active sky of gray clouds suggests a change in weather. "Faneuse" is an excellent example of Dupré's skill as a painter and a valuable contribution to the genre of rural realism. #juliendupre #dupre #frenchacademicart #genre #figurepainting #harvester #rehsgalleries #19thcenturyart #beauty #beautifulwoman #harvesting #faneuse #france #frenchcountryside #landscape #haying #wheatfield (at Rehs Galleries.
