Back when Dr. Iyaz was still around, Lily sometimes would go to the jungle and find medicinal herbs to bring back to help with restocking. But that was a while ago, before... everything. Medicinal restock supply was another task that Lily had dropped the ball on. She barely went anywhere that was not within a two minute vicinity of the High House.

But today would be different. She’d dragged herself out of bed and got ready, and now she was semi-put-together and in the entryway of the apothecary. She didn’t see Dr. Nesh, but Hazel Beaufort was there.

She’d heard Hazel had joined the apothecary workers after the distillery thing but she still wasn’t sure why. Anyone could memorize herbs’ properties, she supposed, but alcohol to medicine seemed to her a large jump.

Well, it didn’t matter. Nothing really mattered. If Hazel knew enough to help her, that would suffice.

Lily smiled. “Hi Hazel!” she said. “Good morning. Afternoon. Uh... not sure. Do you guys have anything that can, like... turn my brain off?” She paused, considering how that sounded, and then added: “Or at least something to improve energy levels?”

Every year since she’d moved to the city Kaitlin had hoped against hope that the 22nd would be warm. Every year her hopes were dashed. Winter was terrible. She didn’t think she’d ever get used to it. But today was not a day she could hide away from the cold, not a day she would want to. It was Hazel’s birthday. Which meant lunch in the park regardless of the weather. It felt nice to have a tradition with Hazel, especially on Hazel’s special day. After putting on her coat she slid the small box holding Hazel’s gift into her pocket, a smile on her face as she patted it. Hopefully Hazel would like the gift. Kaitlin had spent most of January trying to find the perfect gift. This felt like it. Excited she hurried off to meet Hazel in the park. “Hazel!” Kaitlin called out to her as soon as she saw her, hand waving excitedly. “Happy birthday,” she told Hazel as she pulled her into a hug. They’d known each other for a decade now. It seemed incredible that it had been that long and that it had only been ten years. Hazel had become almost a sister to her in that time. Almost because even if Hazel didn’t seem to care about the difference, Kaitlin couldn’t get past the fact that she was only human. It was easier now. When people mistook them for sisters Kaitlin didn’t correct them, instead smiling and laughing with Hazel about it. “How has your day been so far?”
