hbser is a label used to describe people who believe that transgender people have to want to transition and adhere to their gender orientation’s gender roles. many of them believe transgender people have to be straight too, lest they “fetishize transness”.
transmedicalism is different in that transmedicalists believe that transgender people deserve access to transition resources. should the person desire to undergo transition is entirely up to the individual. gender roles and sexual orientation are completely disconnected from gender orientation, and transgender people can reject transition for financial, social, religious, political, mental, emotional, and mental reasons.
What does hbs stand for
Harry Benjamin Syndrome, a way of medicalizing trans women, responsible for most of the medical gatekeeping in place today, also used as a way for “true transsexuals” to validate themselves and separate themselves from “those other freaks” because the true transexuals have a “medical condition”. He (Harry Benjamin) also made a scale that gives rise to the term “true transsexual”, as well as conflates being transsexual with being straight, hence the assumption that trans lesbians like me can’t exist (you have to read the corresponding kinsey scale ranges as if trans women were actually men, because that’s how HB saw us).
