Big thanks to @hollyethecurious for braving all the danger inside the fic and beta the coven nightmare one last time. I can’t bloody hx you enough for all the time and emotion you sacrificed for that silly story ♥
if needed, you can read the fic again or some parts here.
As for the warnings from this parts, there’s well death, bit of blood, lot of bad language, mention of suicide but minor and that’s the major stuff I can think of...
Can find the story on AO3.
Now let’s jump in for one last ride of emotion but first let me bring you straight back where the Young Killian find out who was behind all the horror he'd saw inside the coven...

Previously in Hook's Coven Nightmare….
The lad slowly made his way between the trees so he was behind the man. Killian tried to see what was inside the pool, visible from within the portal, but regretted it the moment he saw DarkHook’s hands around his furry friend. The young boy clasped his hand over his mouth as he tried to remain silent, his heart beating wildly in his chest. The pirate commanded the DarkOne to drown the cat, and it was too much for a now trembling Killian. He needed to do something. He couldn't just run away, not when one of his best friends was about to die because of a dirty, stinking pirate. Giving himself a countdown after he silently climbed up the tree, Killian prepared himself to jump on the man. All he needed was to be as courageous as Rogers and surprise the man so he would drop the dagger.
“Three...Two...One,” murmured Killian as he leapt from the branch.
The man didn’t even looked up as Killian collided with his shoulder, dropping the dagger as he fell face first into the dirt. Killian kicked the dagger away before he punched the man in the face, moving backward he readied himself for more strikes when the man stood up.
----
Blackbeard gasped as consciousness rushed back in. He had been making sure the Dark One - no his Dark One - was executting his orders correctly. Making sure he, Blackbeard, would get his revenge on the weak and pathetic Jones. On every single version of him. A dark grin lit up Blackbeard’s face at the thought. His plan was evil and perfect. Soon he would only have to get rid of the Dark One and... that wasn’t entirely correct, there was still one Jones outside their house.
Memories flowed back inside his head and he snapped his head up from the ground, his eyes searching for the little brat. The little wretch had jumped on him and knocked him out.
“Where’s the… You! I’m going to tear you apart, you little shit!” the pirate spat as he set himself back on track.
Not wasting another second, Blackbeard jumped to his feet and ran toward the small boy who was trying to run away after he’d kicked him while he had still been in the fog of his mind. His now swollen face throbbed in rhythm with the rage coursing through his body. He quickly grabbed the lad by the shirt and lifted him into the air, his free hand coming to choke him forcefully.
“You filthy muck! I’m going to make you regret what you’ve done! And then... then I’ll unleash the Dark One on you, and this time, I’ll make sure he does kill you, you little brat!”
As soon as he spoke about the Dark One, Blackbeard realized he was no longer in possession of the dagger. He turned his attention away from the lad in order to search for the wavy blade. Luckily for him, it was just a few steps behind. Blackbeard quickly started walking in its direction when burgundy smoke appeared right in front of him and just behind the dagger. The little boy cried out as Blackbeard lunged forward and picked up the dagger from the ground, not bothering about the lad’s throat still clenched in his left hand. When the pirate stood up he found himself face to face with none other than DarkHook himself.
Jones opened his eyes wide at the sight of his enemy, and the lad who was trying his best to breathe through the pain the man was inflicting. With a deep growl, DarkHook lifted his hand and the lad disappeared before Blackbeard could even use the power of the dagger on him. Now with the lad safe somewhere else, he could deal with the crazy man in front of him. Hook remembered the version of the pirate he encountered in his realm, and the quick work he’d made of the nuisance. But it seemed this version of Edward Teach held quite a hatred against Killian Jones.
“So we meet again... Or should I say, we finally meet! “ Blackbeard introduced, his hand gripping the dagger, already set on controlling the Dark One.
“I’ll make you pay for what you’ve done.”
“Oh, poor fool. You won’t do a thing to me, not now, not ever,” Blackbeard sneered, waving the dagger in DarkHook’s face.
Hook winced at the truth of Blackbeard, but didn’t let his own menacing countenance waiver. He needed to gain more time in order to get the dagger back in his possession and fix things as planned. However, their duel of looks was suddenly broken by Blackbeard’s laugh, unsettling DarkHook for a fraction of a second.
“Well well well. As this won't lead you anywhere, let’s talk about what I need. Shall we, mate? Where’s the child.”
“I don’t know,” Hook calmly answered, telling the simple truth. He had sent the lad away to a safe place, that was all. “And even if I did know, I wouldn’t-”
“Quiet, you bitch!” the other man growled. “You’re going to bring the little coward here.”
DarkHook didn’t acquiesce to his request, glaring at the man harder. He wouldn’t bend his knees under the pressure of any threat. But Blackbeard was not ready to give up what he wanted either.
“What do you think you’re doing, Dark One? Stop playing the hero. You’re not. All you’re doing right now is making me sick,” Blackbeard spat, his face showing his revulsion. “Now, let me make myself clear, slave: bring back the little rat or I’ll make sure you kill the rest of the Hooks, and for good this time.”
DarkHook flinched at the words. He didn’t know what the man had in mind, precisely, but it couldn’t be good. Since he’d taken back the dagger, Blackbeard hadn’t used it directly to order him to do anything. Instead, it simply served as a reminder that he was in control again. That little detail made any next action from him potentially life threatening for the Coven. Hook couldn’t risk the death of the others, nor the safety of the young lad. But if the bastard had to use the dagger on him they would all be dead anyway. Any loopholes were out of reach. It was a dead end.
“So what say you, Jones…” Blackbeard taunted, lifting the dagger in front of him, ready to use it with his next breath. “Are you a coward like the rest of the Hooks, or has the darkness given you the balls to fight back?”
Blackbeard’s laugh froze Hook’s blood. There was just one thing he could do. One option to try in order to reduce the collateral damages that were now ineluctable. Clenching his jaw one last time, DarkHook closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
“Alright... I’ll bring back Killian.”
“Good boy. Now-”
“But I want to make a deal with you,” Hook cut in, clenching his hand at his side, his knuckles turning white while his burning gaze was set on the pirate in front of him.
Blackbeard looked shocked for an instant before he scoffed at the request of the Dark One.
“I’ll bring back the lad, but I want you to promise that you won’t touch a single hair on his head. He has nothing to do with you revenge. This is between you and us. Not the lad. He’s just a blank slate.” DarkHook petitioned, hoping his arguments would make the man consider the offer.
“Mmm… well you’re in no position to make any deal with me. However, you’re lucky. I might agree to your deal… but on one condition: you shall beg me for it.” the pirate declared, standing tall and proud in front of DarkHook, a feral grin darkening his face.
This time Hook’s face fell at the terms set by Blackbeard. He couldn’t do that, it was against his nature. Went against everything he had built since he became a pirate, since he’d become the Dark One, possibly the greatest of them. Yet here he was, the lives of the young Killian and the others on the line without a single way-out. Lives stopping him from making the selfish choice. While the darkness laughed at him, DarkHook lowered his eyes, biting his lip and regretting he hadn’t killed the man earlier instead of saving Killian. Which now seemed to have only been a temporary reprieve.
“Please,” DarkHook started solemnly, taking a moment to breathe. “I’ll do what you ask, but don’t hurt the lad.”
“I said... beg for your deal,” Blackbeard ordered. His eyes scanning the Dark One’s face.
“Please. Don’t hurt him. I’ll do as asked but please,” DarkHook mumbled, unable to find the necessary force to speak clearly. His strong facade began to crack, revealing the weakness underneath.
Without a moment of hesitation, Blackbeard lifted his arm and violently slapped Hook, snapping his face to the side as it followed the force of the blow. Without moving, the Dark One lifted his gaze back to Blackbeard who was grinning at him. He hadn’t drawn blood but Hook’s cheek was turning a deep red, his skin stinging from the strike.
“I said… Beg, slave!” Blackbeard growled, squeezing the dagger.
Hook’s eyelids fluttered as his whole body surrendered to the command. Just like the first moment he had felt the control of the dagger over him back in his laboratory, Hook tried to fight against the command but again, it was all in vain. It seemed that his only power was to stretch out time before the inevitable. The other pirate hardened his vice grip on the dagger, choking DarkHook as he was fighting with all his power against the new order.
Slowly, Hook lifted his head, facing the black and red clothed pirate, locking his gaze with his. The first word came out choked, his whole body a slave to the powerful tremors. Then the rest followed, in a raw and desperate voice. DarkHook hated it. Hated the fact he was, indeed, desperate, that he had that unbridled passion to save the others. Had that goal stirring in his soul while he was literally begging for Killian’s life. By the time he finally managed to speak his request in its full length, Hook’s body was shivering with shame, but also rage. The distant, irritating, giggling voices of the darkness and past dark ones echoed in the back of his mind, their cruelty somehow softened by the constant buzzing in his ears.
“Kiss my boots,” Commanded Blackbeard coldly.
“Wha-what?”
“Kiss. My. Boots,” the man repeated.
Hook’s stomach twisted, the action followed by his fall onto his knees. His eyes never left Blackbeard’s. Jolting, Hook leaned forward, wrenching his neck in order to maintain eye contact, his lips twisted in disgust. Blackbeard lifted a challenging eyebrow at Hook who let his head fall down, trembling lips reaching for the man’s leather boots. DarkHook’s hand came to rest behind Blackbeard ankle, showing the man he was fully submitting to his desire.
As soon as the second boot was kissed, Blackbeard violently kicked away Hook’s face. Hook’s grunt echoed before Blackbeard relented his approval of Hook’s submission. Hook spat blood on the ground from his split lips and damaged tongue, waiting for the next blow or new command, but for once Blackbeard remained silent. After a long moment, Hook dared to lift his gaze. Blackbeard stared at his hunched form, then he flexed his fingers around the dagger’s handle until DarkHook could feel the grip on his own skin. He squirmed on the ground, trying to run away from the invisible touch.
Hook now understood what Blackbeard was waiting for. A thanks. A show of gratitude for the generosity shown to him. Nausea over flowed within him, threatening to make him lose what remained in his gut. After panting a few seconds in the hope he could make the sick feeling disappear, if only for a moment, DarkHook gulped a few mouthfuls of air, gathering what was left of the courage inside of him, quieting his pride and what was left of honor.
“T-thanks,” whimpered Hook, biting his tongue.
“Mmh?”
“I…T-thank you,” breathed Hook again, keeping his eyes closed, and his head facing the ground as best he could while being on his side.
“I don’t hear you, slave. What did you say?” Blackbeard almost laughed, smiling as DarkHook finally faced him again.
“Thank you.” He spoke more distinctly this time.
“Oh, but what for?” asked Blackbeard, innocently.
“For taking my deal,” murmured DarkHook, furiously clenching his jaw.
“I’m sorry, what did you say?”
DarkHook glared at the man. All previous shame was replaced by a burning anger. Blackbeard was making sure to draw out the pleasure of seeing him suffer, seeing him weak, spread on the floor, begging. All without having to use the dagger. DarkHook was filled with rage, along with a desperate need to kill, to destroy the man in front of him, but the others’ lives depending on him put an abrupt end to any rash and foolish move. With a deep shuddering breath, DarkHook slowly pulled himself together, brought his feet under him and stood.
“I-I said. T-thank you for- ta-taking my- deal,” DarkHook stammered.
“Oh, you’re welcome, slave! I would say it’s a pleasure to seal that deal with you, but…” Blackbeard circled the Dark One before facing him again. “It seems you still haven’t convinced me to actually agree to your deal… However, I’m a man of honor,” Blackbeard stated, mocking the Jones’ expression. “And if you say it correctly this time, I will agree to your terms. I swear it on this very blade,” Blackbeard finished, bringing up the dagger, toying with its tip before throwing a glare at DarkHook.
Hook did not move, did not breathe until his brain came to terms with the latest request of Blackbeard. Asking for his deal, that he did easily. Begging had been another thing, but he’d managed to do it after several forced attempts. But this? This was impossible, even under the force of the dagger. He could not say the word Blackbeard was longing for. Couldn’t say “Master” to the monster in front of him.
“Very well… so, who will you be killing first? The tiny man? Oh, no. Jones! Jones would be perfect-”
“No please!” screamed DarkHook, unable to bear the idea of being forced to kill all his friends.
“There’s no ‘pretty please’ anymore, Hook,” Blackbeard whined in a mocking tone.
“Don’t do this, Black-” Hook stopped himself and shut his eyes, trying to prepare himself for the ultimate humiliation.
His lips formed the first letter, opened to pronounce the first syllable, but no sound came out of his throat. His mouth became an arid desert. Choking back a whimper, DarkHook tried again, but there was not much luck of emitting a sound. Boredom stretched over Blackbeard’s face, urging DarkHook to will the word upon his lips. His prayer was exhausted a moment later but it was incomprehensible: a heap of sounds, all put together along painful moans and whimpers. But it was done. He’d said it. To a great cost of himself, but he did it.
Only Blackbeard wasn’t seeing it the same way.
The pain lasted a fraction of a second but the burn set ablaze right after, the cool sensation of the blood leaking from the fresh wound making DarkHook shiver . He did not move, staring right in front of him while in his mind he was screaming for more blood. Screaming to eradicate the despicable pirate, make him pay, unleash his power to get his revenge and destroy the nuisance. To-
“Say it again.”
DarkHook turned his eyes, looking at Blackbeard who had lifted the dagger in front of him.
“I command you, Dark One. Say it again. And this time I want to hear it. Crystal. Clear.”
“Mm-...Master,” Hook breathed. Blackbeard glared at him in response. “Please, m-mas-tter. I beg you. Don’t hurt the lad. P-please! I beg you, Maaas-st-ter.”
Blackbeard simply dropped his arm to his side, locking the dagger in his belt but keeping it in his hand.
“See? That wasn’t so hard!” Blackbeard paused, assessing how wrecked DarkHook looked. “Well, slave. I agree to your deal and shall honor it,” Blackbeard declared, gazing at the dagger. “I, BlackBeard, will not harm the little street rat. Now honor your part, Dark One”
DarkHook took several minutes to gather himself, feigning concentration for the spell so Blackbeard would leave him be, even for just a few seconds. His heart was beating against his rib cage, snuffing out the sound in his ears. For an instant, DarkHook almost felt like he was alone in the forest, but too soon Blackbeard coughed and Hook had to focus on his part of the deal, locating the lad and bringing him back.
He made sure the lad wouldn’t be on Blackbeard’s side, and a few meters behind his own back. When Hook opened his eyes again, it was to see Blackbeard smiling, his eyes glued to the lad. Hook darted a quick glance at the boy. He was definitely looking lost and frightened at the view of the pirate, his arms wrapped around a large teddy bear, his small hands squeezing the plush. But he was safe. Nothing would happen to him.
Blackbeard started laughing while both Jones frowned, holding a questionable look at the pirate who was now walking right next to DarkHook. Blackbeard came to rest his dirty hand around one lapel of Hook’s jacket, pulling the Dark One closer. Then in a false caring whisper, Blackbeard started to talk to Hook, his gaze still on the lad who was now hiding his face inside the teddy bear’s fur.
“-and now...kill him.” Blackbeard finished.
DarkHook gasped, all blood drained from his head as his heart stopped beating. Quivering, Hook turned his head to face Blackbeard with a confused and shocked face. The man just stared at him, not bothered one bit by what he’d just order.
“We made a deal!” reminded DarkHook, his hand grabbing Blackbeard’s arm.
“I know. And you were right earlier: the brat is nothing for me… just leverage. A tool for a better purpose! Now do it! Or I’ll use the dagger to order you to KILL the rest of your precious coven!” spat Blackbeard with a force of venom.
“That wasn’t what we agreed t-”
“Oh, yes it is, Dark One! Because I won’t be the one doing the harming.”
The truth hit Hook in the face. He could feel it. The deal wasn’t broken. Blackbeard was respecting the rules. It was only him who’d been daft enough not to make sure Blackbeard wouldn’t use any loophole. He had let his emotions cloud his judgment earlier and he now had to face the consequences. He thought he could save the lad by making this deal, but he had just sentenced him to death. By his own hand.
In his misery, Hook wished Blackbeard had ordered him to kill the boy. Wish he could pass the fault to the dagger, to something other than himself. Instead, he was about to kill the boy who’d come to consider him as a father figure, by his own choice. Trying to fake the lad’s death would only make the situation worse, and his conscience could not bear the death of every single Hook. Some of them had a family that could perhaps find a way to save them from their current state. If he end up killing them then none of them would have a future.
While Blackbeard arranged the dagger on his belt, DarkHook finally faced the lad who looked at him with an expression that broke his rotten heart. So much love, so much hope… and he would destroy it in the following minutes.
“Oh, and before you do anything,” Blackbeard shouted out. “Make sure to look at him until the end. I want you to face your masterpiece, Hook.”
Hook stared at the grass, the weight on his shoulders suddenly too heavy to move. So Hook forced his mind to picture the corpse of each and every version of himself. All bloody, all dead, all by his hand and hook. Inhaling quickly, Hook shook the picture off and started walking toward the lad. The same image plaguing his vision until he was kneeling in front of the boy who jumped at him, hiding his face in his neck, searching for comfort in his presence. But Hook had to push the lad away, holding the boy’s chin so he could look him in the eyes.
“Hey, lad. Don’t worry, you’re going to be alright.” Hook soothed.
“The bad pirate is frightening me pop,” Killian whispered, squeezing the bear against him.
“Yeah, I know. He’s frightening me, too. But he’ll leave you alone very soon. I-I’m going to take you to another place again, okay?”
“But I was alone there!! I don’t want to be alone again! Please!” pleaded Killian, tears filling his eyes, breaking Hook’s heart.
“Oh, but you won’t this time. I... You’re going to fall asleep, okay? And then, when you wake up you’ll be in a better place. You’ll be with people you love and who love you so bloody much.”
“Like... like Liam?” Killian asked in a tight voice.
“Aye. Like Liam.”
“And will Tiny Hook and KillyCat be there, too? Will the others join us there?” wondered Killian, hope brightening his face.
“They’ll be there as well. And… and I think mama Alice will be waiting for you as well,” added DarkHook, making sure the lad would have a mind filled with happy and lovely pictures.
“Mama? But she… She’s...” sobbed Killian, remembering that terrible night when their mother faded away. His father had told them something about life and death, but he was too young to understand.
“Alice will be there, Killian. She’ll be waiting for you in your new home.” Hook smiled, as he kept lying to the boy.
“That’s so cool!! But how... how are we going there?”
“We?” frowned Hook as he tried to understand why the lad was asking that for the second time.
“Aye! You’re coming with me, aren’t you Popa?” the lad asked with a toothful smile.
“I… Yeah. Yeah, if you wish me to. I’ll be there with you if you want, lad.”
Killian jumped and hugged Hook with all his might, his small body almost choking him. Hook hugged him back, but his smile faded away as his mind showed again what would happen if he didn’t end the lad now.
“Alright, little man. I’m going to ask you something.” The boy nodded with enthusiasm, resting his chin on the top of his plush. “I want you to promise me something, Killian.”
“What is it?”
“I want you to keep looking me in the eyes, okay? No-”
“No matter what! Aye-aye captain!” the lad ended, waving the bear’s right paw at Hook at the command.
Hook huffed at the intelligence of the boy. Yet, he was still innocent and didn’t really get it. With a sad smile, Hook gently stroked the lad’s cheek, trying his best not to show the anxiety that was eating him alive. Taking deep breaths, Hook nodded to the lad, and tested the concentration of the boy: moving his arms, touching his body, using his magic. And then, in a small cloud of smoke, DarkHook produced a small dagger in his hand behind the boy’s back. He smiled at the lad who made a silly face at him but kept his two blue eyes, sparkling with joy, mischief and life, glued to his.
The movement was swift and quick. His hand letting go of the dagger, as if it had burned him, his shaking hand coming to rest on the back of the boy, drawing circular motions. Killian’s face froze and his smile fell with the powerful choke coming from the lad. Hook smiled for the lad, mumbling comforting words. Quickly, Killian’s body started to tremble even with the soothing touch of DarkHook on his back. The lad wrapped his arms tighter around his teddy, his body now shaking violently as if he had been under frigid water.
“It’s alright Killian. It’s alright. It’s gonna be alright lad, I promise!” Hook whispered, the quiver in his voice betraying him.
“Popa?”
“Yeah my boy, what is it?”
“I-I feel c-cold popa…” the lad whispered, his knees buckling.
“I know lad, I know. But it’s okay. You’re gonna be okay!” Hook choked, tears stinging his eyes.
“W-what h-happening? I, I feel w-weird …”
Tears flowed down KIllian’s now paled cheeks as he started to cry, his trembling lips turning almost purple. Hook wished he could say something but his throat clenched until he had to gasp for air, much like the frail, deathly pale body he was mostly holding in his arms.
“I-I’m sorry, Killian,” sobbed Hook, his hand coming to cradle the lad’s cheek but he quickly took it away when his fingers left a bloodprint on the skin. “I’m so sorry- You’ll be alright! I- I, I lov-”
Suddenly the lad stiffened, heaving two times before Hook saw the light die in his eyes. His arms became slack, the once tightly held teddy bear slowly falling to the ground, rowling away, its beautiful blue fur now stained with blood. DarkHook’s brain seized, his arms letting go of Killian’s body who fell with a thud to the floor. Hook came back to his senses, feeling the cold fluid on his skin, tasting salt mixed with cooper as his mouth opened. No sound came out, only tears running freely down his cheeks at the atrocity he’d just commited. DarkHook let himself fall on his hand and hook, his face above Killian’s. Trembling fingers passed over the lad’s eyes, closing them with blood smears left behind.
Between wracked sobs and whimpers, Hook managed to take a deep breath, ready to scream out his pain but any sound was cut off as Blackbeard drove his dagger into Hook’s back. The pain rippled through his body, intensifying in its ebb and flow and leaving pins and needles in its wake. Hook’s eyes opened wide as he fought to breathe, but was limited to only panicked gasps. Blood trickled from his lips, falling on Killian’s sleep-like face, making blood-like tears.
“This is where you end, Jones,” Blackbeard spat in Hook’s ear, thrusting the blade a little deeper, enjoying the growing whimpers of the Dark One. “You’ll die with what you’ve just done as your last vision, and how I, Blackbeard , beat you. My triumph, the last thing you’ll hear!”
With those words, DarkHook felt his world crumble, the pool under the lad’s body growing quickly as his own life was draining, his blood melding with the brighter one of the boy’s. His arms gave way and Hook fell onto his side, his gaze locked on the small corpse beside him while his lungs desperately tried to fill with air. All Hook did was choke on the thick blood invading his airway. In his last effort, DarkHook tried to lift his hand, wanting to hold the young boy’s one last time. He would never know if he reached the lad's hand as everything went black and he, too, joined him in death.
Blackbeard watched as the dark pool of blood spread around the two bodies, slowly engulfing them in its darkness before the black puddle reabsorbed into the ground, the rotting grass being the only proof of the dark deed committed there.
Once that was done, Blackbeard sighed and closed his eyes, enjoying the deadly silence surrounding him. He’d done it. He ended the filthy pirate, took his revenge on him, brought terror and despair, and gods did it feel good.
The dagger that was still in his hand started to vibrate and Blackbeard opened his eyes stunned, looking on with curiosity as the black letters upon the blade began to shift. A new name settled into place seconds later and Blackbeard could only stare at it, not surprised yet not prepared to see his own name on the curvy blade.
“Does that mean….” Blackbeard whispered before a vision materialized in front of him.
“That it does!” the imp giggled.
“Rum-Rumpelstiltskin!” Blackbeard stammered, taking a step back at the view of the Dark One of his realm.
“Oh, come now, dearie! After everything you’ve just accomplished, you’re surprised to see me?” the vision laughed, taking several steps toward the pirate, already enjoying its new prey.
“I’m no coward!” Blackbeard countered quickly, lest the imp think otherwise..
“Good! This is very good, dearie!” The vision circled the pirate, scanning his mind, his emotions, and so much more. “Well now, there’s so many things we’re going to do with you, Dark One…” the imp grinned, clapping his hand together in excitement. They saw what they wanted in Blackbeard; a man less intelligent than their last host, more malleable and easier to persuade.
“Are we?” asked Blackbeard, surprised by the way the Dark One, or at least its vision, was talking about him. Did it really think he was stupid enough to not see through its words and their true meaning?
“Yeeeesss! But first you’ll need to learn to control the power in you! Wouldn’t want you to do piddly things like the previous dark one” the darkness tempted, rapidly changing subjects.
“I’m not a weak man. So bring it!”
“Oh, yes! Although, it won’t be me who will teach you the greatest tricks.” the imp chuckled, disappearing from Blackbeard’s vision.
The pirate frowned, looking around for the vision, for the imp or whatever form the darkness was about to take. However, he was clearly alone now and Blackbeard was rapidly growing impatient. The thrill in his blood wanted to know more about his new powers, wanted to enact terror and exact revenge on everyone who had ever crossed him.
“...But I will.”
The dark voice echoed right behind Blackbeard, turning his blood cold. Facing the voice, Blackbeard’s expression shattered at the sight of the man.
“Y-you!? H-how? I’ve just killed you! How can you still be here!” Blackbeard shouted, outraged by the presence of the pirate he killed minutes ago.
“Oh, sure you did!” DarkHook whispered, stepping right in front of the pirate with glee. “But only my corporeal envelope. My soul will live forever, mate. I was, and will always be, a dark one. A part of the darkness that is now running through your veins,” DarkHook explained, smiling in the face of Blackbeard’s turning white, enjoying the sight of terror filling his killer.
The bastard had enjoyed torturing his friends, his family. He even killed the boy who was like a son to him. He was going to enjoy getting his revenge on the man for the rest of his miserable life.
“And now, mate. You’re stuck with me...For-Ev-Er,” DarkHook finished, emphasizing each syllable of his final word as the reality of it forced its way into Blackbeard comprehension..
A strangled cry of despair escaped Blackbeard’s throat before he fainted, the dark laugh of his enemy echoing in his head as he drowned in the darkness.
----
Blackbeard woke up gasping, fragments of a dark and feral sound echoing inside his skull, goosebumps still visible on his shirtless chest while sweat slowly ran down from his hairline. His eyes looked around him, trying to focus on something for more than two seconds, giving his brain time to realize where he was. To realize what happened.
Taking deep breaths Blackbeard let his head fall into his hands, fingers massaging his eyes while asking himself what happened before. Then the memories came back. He remembered the coven, his attack and…his success. He managed to get his revenge on all the Hooks, on all the vermin. He was the one that came out victorious in the fight. Still he remained nervous. His body reacting like he was afraid of something. As if something was going to happen to him.
Getting up from the bunk, Blackbeard made his way out of the captain’s quarters, taking the time to check the whole ship’s hold, seeking comfort in knowing he was back aboard the Jolly Roger. He was alone and the Jolly was his. A smile spread across his face as he came out on deck, the daylight welcoming his arrival. Wind gently blew in the mainsail, the calm sea stretching toward the horizon. A bloody wonderful sight, thought Blackbeard as he finally let all his tensions go. A sudden crash caught his attention and he immediately turned, only to face an empty deck. A strong shiver spread up his spine as his breathing increased.
“Who’s there?!” shouted Blackbeard, his hand reaching for the pistol attached to his belt.
Another noise echoed, coming directly from the wheel.
“Show yourself! You won’t escape this ship alive, you dead rat!” spat Blackbeard as he climbed the few stairs leading to the helm, but again he found no one there.
“What is this trickery??” he exclaimed, spinning on his heels as he searched for the source of the noise.
His mind suddenly considered an impossibility that made his blood run cold. He had killed all the versions of Jones, making sure they would never be a problem again. But what if he failed? What if they weren't all dead?
Blackbeard didn’t have time to think upon it when the ship was shaken by powerfuls waves, making Blackbeard lose his balance. The pirate ended up face first on the wooden floor, cursing with every word and expression he knew. But his anger was cut the moment his gaze focused on the pair of black leather boots now standing in front of him. Blackbeard quickly lifted his head, trying to see the face of the intruder but the sun was blocking his view.
“On your feet for the captain,” demanded the stranger, coldly.
“Ha! Captain?” laughed Blackbeard as he stood up once again, brandishing his pistol at the cheeky stranger. “And who are you to dare say such a thing to the captain of this ship?”
One of the sails moved with the wind, blocking the sun so Blackbeard could finally see who he was about to kill. However, Blackbeard didn’t make a move. Instead he burst out laughing at the man who was standing in front of him. Once Blackbeard was done, he shook his head and faced the other pirate, his expression hard as a rock. Blackbeard’s cocky grin slowly faded away while confusion spread over his face.
“Who the fuck are you, lad?” he asked once again, a slight tremble in his voice, his fingers nervously squeezing his weapon.
“I think you know the answer to that question, mate.”
Without thinking Blackbeard pulled the trigger, looking at the imposter in front of him. The bullet barely touched the man’s chest before falling to the floor. Blackbeard frowned and stared at the useless bullet lying on the deck while his opponent looked at him with raised eyebrows.
“Is that all you’ve got?” he mocked when Blackbeard deigned to look up again.
“H-how? Y-you. I... No that’s not possible!” yelled Blackbeard as anger fueled his mind, and he shot the man again and again.
Blackbeard hadn’t yet emptied his pistol on his enemy before the man grabbed the weapon and crushed it into ashes.
“Enough!” the man yelled, his face remaining calm and void of all emotion.
Blackbeard’s knees buckled under the wave of fear submerging him. Instead of falling to the floor, Blackbeard felt the pull of magic and once the cloud disappeared, he found himself attached to the anchor of the Jolly with the now choppy seas leaping at his feet beneath him.
“What- What do you want!?” screamed Blackbeard in terror at the man who was leaning on the rail above him.
He did not answer, but Blackbeard saw the man’s hand move. The following second, his body was plunged into the frigid water, falling deep into the dark ocean. Falling towards the silty floor, but Blackbeard knew he would not live long enough to feel the anchor hit bottom, his lungs already screaming for air. Right when he was about to open his mouth, his head broke the surface, the magic lifting the wet anchor in the air. Blackbeard shook his head, trying to free his vision from his wet hair while coughing up the water he’d swallowed.
In front of him DarkHook was looking on, his face empty of emotion. Then the magic freed the anchor once more and Blackbeard was back into the sea, but this time near the surface enough so his head was out of the water thanks to the valley between two waves. Blackbeard couldn’t decide which fate was the worse. His throat and nose were burning because of the salted water slamming into his face as the ship started to move toward the deepest waters.
After what felt like hours, Blackbeard felt the anchor being lifted in the air again. This time he was welcomed by DarkHook’s grin and laugh as he used his magic to control the position of the anchor once more.
From that moment, Blackbeard’s life became hell between the burning sea water and the crushing pressure growing each time the anchor and himself drowned a little deeper. Each time, right before Blackbeard thought he was about to die, the sick bastard would bring him back to the surface, laughing at him with a sadistic smile, making sure he would stay conscious and alive no matter how much water he swallowed.
----
Blackbeard opened his eyes while his heart pounded inside his chest.
“Oh, look who’s awake? Are you ready to play again sweetie...um, Captain Blackbeard?” a sweet voice asked.
Blackbeard blinked before he realized he had been holding his breath since he woke up from the bloody nightmare. The fresh air rushed inside his lungs, freeing them from the torture.
“Yeah. Yeah I’m all good, my lovely.” Blackbeard answered, grabbing the lady next to him so he could kiss her properly.
The day always started like this. Him escaping a bloody nightmare to find himself welcomed by warm arms from one of the lucky wenches that had come into his bunk. Each time Blackbeard would take what he needed from the lady in his bed in order to anchor himself in reality. A reality where he was in command of the Jolly Roger, at the head of a crew full of dirty pirates, the most dangerous and cruel mercenaries the Seven Seas could offer him. And of course, a flock of wenches, each more beautiful than the last. Fresh flesh that Blackbeard used to satisfy his and the rest of his men’s needs. Wrenches who were renewed at every port when wanted.
When Blackbeard was done ravishing this morning’s offering, he went for a soak in his personal bathroom, letting his sore and dirty body relax in the hot and steaming water while taking long pulls of his rum. The day promised to be a great day. The sea was gently rocking the ship and the winds were in their favor, making their trip almost twice as fast as usual. For once the crew was silent. Typically, Blackbeard would hear screams of the women running below, followed by the bestial noises of his crew. However, today they were silent, and Blackbeard let himself close his eyes and enjoy the respite he was given.
Canon shots roused him as he jolted in the now cold bath, splashing water on the wood around him. By the time Blackbeard had collected his thoughts he realized the ship was plunged back into the silence.
“What the?” exhaled Blackbeard as he frowned and sat up in the bathtub, looking for the woman that had been sleeping in his bed just before.
“Woman? Woman! Where the devil are you hiding?” grunted Blackbeard when he saw no trace of her presence inside his cabin.
There was no one in his quarters that answered him. Then screams mixed with laughter echoed above him: something was happening on deck. Quickly finding some pants, Blackbeard reached for his sword before he burst into the hallway just in time to see a man turned into ash so the wench he was chasing after could escape his grasp. Shaking his head in disbelief, Blackbeard called for his right hand several times but the man never answered. Blackbeard felt his anger rise until he was back on deck and was met with half of his crew tied to the main mast while the other half was being thrown overboard or worse, turned into golden statues with Blackbeard’s treasures when they tried to escape their punishment.
“Blimey!” Blackbeard cursed at the carnage in front of him.
“Oh, but look at who’s here, mates! Here comes your savior!” a dark voice shouted from behind the shirtless captain.
Blackbeard turned around until he was facing the human who spoke. A human he knew all too well. A human who Blackbeard had been sure to never see his scurvy-face again in this life. But he couldn’t deny what his eyes were seeing: dark clothes covering his body from his head to his toes, strange shreds of fabric floating at his side with the strong winds that were rising. A picture of chaos incarnated standing right in front of him and his crew on his ship. Despite the cold seeping into his bones the longer he watched the dark figure, Blackbeard felt his body shiver with rage and shock at the presence of the bloody Dark One on deck.
“You?!? What in hell?” shouted Blackbeard, getting ready to fight the demon standing proudly above them all.
“Oh, come on, mate! Don’t act like you don’t know why I am here?” the man laughed while the rest of the crew got agitated.
“ I certainly don’t you pig head!” spat Blackbeard, for once telling the truth.
“Tut-tut-tut. Is that a way to speak to me now? You know what happens when you follow bad form...” grinned the Dark One.
“I don’t bloody care, Hook!” yelled the pirate.
“Oh, but you should… I mean. It’s your life or theirs!”
The rest of the crew fell silent and Blackbeard looked at his enemy, stunned by his words. What was that dick was insinuating? What had he missed?
“So! What’s your choice?”
DarkHook slowly walked toward the captain of the still silent crew, paying attention at how they were all staring at their captain in the hopes he would save them. Although some looked away, ready to face their deaths as the good servants they were. DarkHook almost felt sick at the view, wondering for an instant on how a captain could ever sacrifice the lives of hundreds of men for his. He’d been a pirate for a long time, still was, but even the darkness could not take away who he was at his core, someone who believed in good form.
“I’ll never bow or take orders from you, you piece of shit!” Blackbeard snarled, spatting at DarkHook’s feets.
DarkHook lifted an eyebrow at the answer he’d been given and his face darkened even as a sinister grin seemed to light up. The next second, magic filled the air and the rest of Blackbeard’s crew was sent to their demise, in the most atrocious suffering that could exist. Blackbeard said nothing though, as he watched the blood of his man gather at his feet.
“And they say, I possess the darkest heart in all the realms.” DarkHook softly spoke, pacing around Blackbeard like an animal.
“You can go to hell!” Blackbeard murmured, his voice filled with venom toward the other man.
“Oh, but I’m already in!” He smiled at his prey, thrusting his hand in Blackbeard’s chest. “And you’re coming with me for everything you’ve done since taking my ship and staining her reputation.”
Blackbeard suddenly felt like chains were attached to his four limbs, paralysing him. Then a terrible burning spread through his back, the smell of burned skin mixed with singed linens invading his nostril as he screamed and crumbled under the pain. Weak as he was, Blackbeard quickly lost consciousness while DarkHook kicked him in the side.
When he reopened his eyes, Blackbeard was lying on a rough carpet, his whole body aching. He dared to move a little only to find his legs and arms weighed a ton. Shaking sleep from his head, Blackbeard was hit by the truth: this was no dream. Everything that he’d seen, that he remembered had really happened. And now he was lying completely naked on the floor, cold chains clenching at each and every movement he made. His attention was directed to the massive door in front of him. DarkHook appeared in the feeble light, holding something in his hand, while more chains were hanging from his hook as he slowly walked in Blackbeard’s direction.
“How sweet, puppet. You’re awake just in time for your new outfit!” DarkHook chuckled, waving the round object that he was holding. Instinctively, Blackbeard tried to get away from the Dark One but his back hit cold stone, sending waves of fire through him.
“Oh no, there’s no need to try to escape, pet. Unless you want another punishment?” DarkHook teased Blackbeard who looked at him, fear in his eyes.
“Now do not move. I would hate to hurt you while I put on your shiny new collar…”
Blackbeard froze. A collar? What was happening? This couldn’t be real, he was dreaming. He had to be! But the freezing metal was too real around his neck, sending him into panic as his bloodied hands reached for the collar in desperate hope to tug it until it fell on the floor. But instead, DarkHook violently pulled the collar against his leg so he could attach the metallic leash to it, forcing Blackbeard’s face to meet his inner thigh.
“There, pet. Now you’re perfect.” DarkHook said darkly, petting Blackbeard’s head and taking what was left of the man’s pride.
DarkHook sat on his ebony throne, located right behind them, tugging at the leash until Blackbeard was obligated to sit if he wanted to continue to breathe. The man still fighting to get free from the hell he’d just awoken in. DarkHook laughed at the reaction before he used his magic to conjure a reddish organ and squeeze it, eliciting whimpers from Blackbeard.
“Now puppet. You’re going to sit still and be a good slave while I receive my guest. Understood?”
Blackbeard’s throat squeezed at the command. He couldn’t remember how the Dark One could have taken his heart, but he couldn’t deny the fact he was at the mercy of DarkHook now. Still he tried to fight against the need to answer with his voice, his head barely nodding.
“I asked you a question, slave,” snarled DarkHook, squeezing the heart harder until its owner yelped.
“I...Y-yes...Yes, master.” Blackbeard forced the words through his mouth, through the growing nausea.
“Good. If you behave well, perhaps I will be nice with you tonight…”
At the possible innuendo Blackbeard gagged, only making DarkHook laugh harder at him until his vision turned black.
----
The dreams were truly starting to get horrific.
That’s what Blackbeard thought every morning. He couldn’t remember the last time he went to sleep and did not wake up in a bunk wet with his sweat, sheets and hair sticking to his skin, his heart beating wildly against his bones, his erratic breaths echoing in his cabin.
Passing his palm over his face, he sat on the edge of the small bed, taking his time to regain some composure. He headed for the small bathroom and took a fresh bath before dressing and climbing to the deck, ready to take the helm for the day. Johnson would take his place as his first mate, and the day would go on just as the other days. Though, he must look like hell as he felt the look of the crew on his back while he walked to his spot. But they all feared him thus none of them dared to show their true feelings once Blackbeard took the helm.
They were sailing close to the shore today, the need to drop the anchor becoming pressing. Even Blackbeard was starting to muse about spiced beverages, hot women, and a comfortable bed for the night.
“Captain! May I submit a proposition to you?” Johnson asked, using more formal graces as usual.
Blackbeard blinked before he thought about the request of his second.
“What is it that you want, Johnson?” coldly asked Blackbeard yet his mind was still on the idea of stopping at the next port.
“Captain, the men are starting to get tired from the long months at sea and-”
“And what? Can’t you make them work? Aren't you and Busar capable of doing your job correctly?” growled Blackbeard as he glared at the man who held his gaze a little longer before swallowing and looking at his feet.
“Captain, it’s been too long. Continuing would ensure the loss of half the crew. We wouldn’t be able to resist any attack if that happens.” Johnson tried to argue even though he knew asking for a day at port would be risky considering the current mood of their captain. “A mutiny could break out at any moment...”
Taking a moment to seriously think of the facts he was being presented, Blackbeard realized that a few days on land wouldn’t hurt them. And perhaps he would be able to change his mind. At the thought of his nightmares, a blurry vision of the dark one appeared in front of his eyes and it was settled.
“Very well. Take the helm and set sail to the closest port. I’ll be in my quarters, make sure no one dares bother me,” Blackbeard ordered, taking his leave.
“Aye-aye, Captain Blackbeard!” Johnson said, glad his request was received favorably.
They made port at sunset, the men cheering as they all took their free evening, heading for the closest bar to refill their bellies with warm rum. However, Blackbeard decided to stay on board, declaring he was tired. Johnson didn’t miss that fact, and decided to take some rum and a hot meal back to the ship for his captain. They all feared Blackbeard, but he wasn’t a fool and he knew it would be best to be on Blackbeard’s good terms if something was to happen to their captain.
After several hours, Johnson’s wait in front of the captain’s quarters was rewarded. Blackbeard opened the door, looking as if he was about to pass out in the next minute. But the angry gaze he gave Johnson still managed to elicit fear.
“What ya want Johnson?” rasped Blackbeard.
“Captain, I... I thought you might like some rum and something to eat.Though it’s probably cold by now, the soup is divine.”
“Get in” Blackbeard declared after a short pause, letting the second enter.
The meal was indeed divine, even cold. Good thing the rum was perfect to get him warm. After a few glasses, Blackbeard started to feel the unpleasant feelings disappear under the alcohol’s influence.
“Pardon me Captain, but I couldn’t help but notice you weren't yourself recently” Johnson mentioned hesitantly, having drank less rum, keeping his mind sharp unlike Blackbeard who wore a rosy tint on his cheeks.
“Tsk-! I’m completely fine Jonh’on! Where did ya get that idea?” hiccoughed Blackbeard.
“Sir, the crew and I didn’t fail to notice the fact you seemed off lately. I doubt the dark circles under your eyes are some khol”Johnson answered, pointing to the dark shadows under Blackbeard’s eyes.
The men fell silent before a burst of a raucous laughter escaped Blackbeard’s mouth as he brought his flask up again to take a large swig of the beverage. Johnson stared at the man in front of him, not knowing how to react. Even drunk, Blackbeard could gut him like a fish. But Blackbeard sat imobile, the smile fixed on his face though his eyes closed themselves. The next second his body toppled, and if not for Johnson intervention Blackbeard would have hit the floor from all his weight.
“Captain! Blackbeard! Sir, are you alright?” Johnson asked, but Blackbeard only chuckled back.
“S-stop p-pretending you care, lad. I know what ya doing, you rat.” Blackbeard spat, pushing away the man who swallowed hard.
“Captain, I-”
“Shut Up! Now get the fuck out of here before I kill you with my bare hands!”
With those words Blackbeard found himself alone with a half empty barrel of rum. At least that one wasn’t trying to take his place. Deep down Blackbeard knew Johnson was right. If the visions were to keep him company, then perhaps looking for some sort of cure wasn’t a bad idea.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The next morning Blackbeard was clothed and ready to search for a cure, asking the innkeeper where he could find the healer of the village. By chance, the village hosted a woman, who apparently was praised for her healing aptitude and high success, if not miracles. Though she lived outside the town in a small house about a five hours walk from the inn. Escorted by his first mate, Johnson, Blackbeard headed for the healer, leaving the command of the ship to the quartermaster Busar, much to Johnson disapproval, but Blackbeard needed to make the man pay for his cowardly attempt to take his place as Captain if he was to die. But that day wasn’t here yet, and so their long trip started.
After the long, winding road, the two men were able to see the small hut from afar. As soon as they approached the house crows started to croak together, announcing the visitors to the healer. Johnson was about to knock at the door when it opened itself, revealing an old woman waiting behind a table. Her face was mostly hidden by her long and tangled hair, though her two blue eyes were piercing through the silver locks. Her long, skinny fingers were decorated with several rings, all crafted with the finest designs or some precious stones. The granny looked at the two strangers, her bright eyes stopping on Blackbeard’s face before a thin smile appeared on her lips.
“Woman, we’re here to-” started Johnson.
“I know why you’re here, darling.” her warm voice answered, though it held a certain authority. “And I will be able to find a cure for your captain… but it will cost you a lot!” she laughed and looked at the two men.
“Money will be yours, woman. Now do your job, or I’ll make sure that you won’t live another day on this earth!” assaulted Blackbeard, not having the patience to play her game.
“Now mate, is that any way to talk to an old woman like me?” she teased back, sending a shiver running through Blackbeard. He couldn’t say why, but the woman was making his skin crawl. “Show me your hand that I might see what evil is troubling you, my child.”
Blackbeard hesitated a moment. But both Johnson and the old lady were staring at him so he slowly reached out, holding his right palm in front of the woman. She took her time, gently palpating his hand, squeezing his wrist, tracing lines with wet fingers, all while mumbling foreign words. Suddenly, she gasped and let go of his hand.
“What is it? Did you find something?” Johnson asked, intrigued by the reaction of the healer.
“I-I must confirm my theory, but this good sir isn’t in God’s grace!” the old woman stumbled, slowly coming to stand in front of Blackbeard who was staring at his hand.
The woman grabbed Blackbeard’s coat so she could place her hand on each side of his head. Then plunged her gaze into his, and the strangest thing occurred. Blackbeard opened his eyes as right in front of him, stood DarkHook instead of the healer. The image flickered but it was enough for Blackbeard to stand away from the woman, looking at her in horror.
“What the?” screamed Blackbeard, looking at his first mate who didn’t seem to understand what was happening. “Didn’t you see him?”
“See who, Captain?” Johnson asked, concerned. He hadn’t seen anything in particular.
“You have demons in your head, Captain.” the woman declared, looking sadly at the second. “We must burn them before they take possession of your body!” she finished, looking back at Blackbeard with worry in her eyes.
“Bloody Hell! Burning them? Are you mad?” yelled Blackbeard, while his whole body tensed, ready to run away the next time he saw the vision of the Dark One.
“Do not worry, sir! It won’t be long, and shouldn’t be too painful!” the woman insisted.
“No! Johnson, kill that witch! We’re going back to the ship!” Blackbeard ordered, but the man was looking at him in anguish, in fear of what the woman had said.
Of bloody course his man would believe her nonsense! He should have known better than to bring one of his crew with him. They were all superstitious, believing in all the bloody sea legends. Looking at his mate, Blackbeard pleaded for him to just follow his orders. But Johnson shook his head and stood behind the old lady.
“I’m sorry, Captain. But the lady is right; it’s the right thing to do. For all of us.”
And with that, the woman grinned, making sure only Blackbeard would see her. Then she held her palm up and set ablaze a red flame, asking for Johnson to hold his Captain still. The first mate obeyed and came to stand behind Blackbeard, holding him firmly in his arms despite Blackbeard’s thrashing and yells.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be quick, mate.”
Blackbeard screamed in horror as the woman in front of him transformed into Dark Hook, the same blue eyes piercing into his soul as he literally set Blackbeard on fire.
-----------
Days passed, and Blackbeard started to realize they were all following the same pattern. He would wake up suddenly from horrible nightmares, would live the day or sometimes a few weeks, but in the end, he would always find him. He was always on his mind. In the end, Dark Hook was always killing him.
Blackbeard thought that knowing that would make a difference. That he would have a chance to survive or escape. But he was wrong on all accounts.
This time, Blackbeard would do nothing. He would wake up and just do nothing with his day. And perhaps he would somehow stay alive.
“How sweet… but I don’t think this is what you call “living”, mate” DarkHook answered, appearing in a cloud of smoke inside Blackbeard’s quarters.
“I don’t care! Anything’s better than all I’ve suffered!” he growled back, standing up and facing DarkHook.
“No, no no no no. No. That isn’t suffering at all.” DarkHook argued, shaking his head and hand to empathize his point.
“What do you want then?!?” screamed Blackbeard, losing his sanity.
“I don’t know. What do you think I want?” played DarkHook, sitting on the desk.
“I don’t bloody care, and I will do what I want this time!”
In the rush, Blackbeard took the knife that was on the floor next to him and plunged it into his chest, right through his heart. DarkHook looked surprised, and all Blackbeard could do was laugh until his body completely shut down.
“Oh, I’m sorry mate, but this isn’t the end for you…”
Blackbeard gasped, his eyes snapping open. He was back on his bed, the sun filtering through the windows as it slowly rose into the sky, a bright new day starting. Blackbeard stared at the windows, at the new day starting over. Again.
Right next to him, DarkHook smiled sadistically at him, waiting for Blackbeard to turn over, knowing that he still couldn’t see the never ending loop of his last day.
Unable to get free. Unable to live. Unable to die.
