“Esme.” Jasper dragged out her name like he was dragging his feet, clinging to the wriggling animal in his arms.  “He won’t go down.  Char’s sat on him, I just took him out for a half hour, and he still won’t let me sleep.”  Without waiting for an answer, he shut the door behind him and promptly deposited the brown Lab on her bed, watching the dog clamber over into her side.  “Can he just...stay here?  And can I?”

           The silence is comfortable between them --- she playing idly with the hem of her sweater, ENTERTAINING HERSELF with thoughts of Beau and smiling softly --- when Edythe catches a stray thought from her mother.  Head tilts, turning to face her, expression COMICALLY OFFENDED.

                           “The way you all think about me now, you would think I was some sort of MARTYR before him.”  Not that they would be wrong --- she remembers how GREY everything had seemed, how quiet and how dull.  And she, numb, every emotion muffled.  And yet, NOW?  The world is bright, and glorious, and she loves him so much she finds herself forgetting that she hates herself.  “Surely I didn’t SMILE so rarely before that it’s worth being surprised about now.”  And yet ---
