They stil could have made their relationship tragic in season 3 that way. The part of me wants to lose my soul again speech would have been more philosophical and less sexual. It could have been "part of me wants a life with no remorse/to abandon guilt." Which is much more humanizing and would be more reminiscent of Jekyll and Hyde thematically which matches the earlier episode Beauty and the Beasts from the same season. He would still have a reason to leave and do a spinoff.
