we need to talk about Catwin.
I've been thinking about this ship for a while now and literally the more I think about it the worse it gets. I really really hope that people who ship them maybe just don't understand how messed up it is so I do want to try and explain my main problems with it.
1: This is the biggest and most important reason EDWIN IS SIXTEEN!!! Yes in supernatural years he is a lot older but he died when he was sixteen, he still has the mind and body of a sixteen year old. I've had a Catking shipper once tell me I was "infantilising" Edwin by calling him sixteen. What???? His age is mentioned multiple times in the show. Also I'm not calling him immature by calling him sixteen, hell I know multiple sixteen year olds who are far more mature then a lot of adults I know and with what Edwin has been through of course he is mature, but that doesn't take away the fact that when he dies his brain stopped developing, therefore he has the brain of a sixteen year old and the body of one. With George looking very much not sixteen people can forget that but Edwin is a minor, a TEENAGER, and you are shipping him with a grown ass man, why??????
2: On they're first meeting the Catking literally trapped Edwin in an ultimatum to either have s£x with him (may I remind you Edwin is 16) or count all the cats in the city otherwise Edwin will be stuck in this unknown city away from his home forever. And I've heard people say "but its not an impossible task! tck knew that Edwin would be able to do it, it was to teach him a lesson to see cats as people!" number one im not sure how you interpreted that last tck scene but he seemed so surprised when Edwin got the correct number, also wdym it was all a lesson, if it was all a lesson it was a bad one because Edwin learnt nothing, he didn't interact with any of the cats ever, he literally just counted them in his head. Plus even if it was not an impossible task and the Catking knew Edwin could do it, it certainly is not an easy task, like seriously look me in the eyes and tell me you could count all the cats in a city in like less then a month, without accidently counting once twice, also I saw someone say that it would be easy because they all follow tck around, you don't know that! Edwin doesn't know that! who's to say there aren't cats hiding in secluded alleyways, in bins and whattnot, you are literally making stuff up 😭. The Catking's intentions were obviously not for Edwin to count all the cats but were for him to give way and have s£x with him.
3: Edwin does not reciprocate. Yes it's obvious that Edwin is attracted to tck, at first (but just because someone finds you attractive it is not an invitation to trap them in your city unless they have s£x with you) but You can find someone attractive and not want to be with them, and Edwin very clearly does not want to be with him. He backs away whenever tck gets too close, in the scene with Edwin and Nikko by the lake when Edwin is being completely honest with her, saying that hes never kissed anyone and then that he might want to kiss Monty, when Niko mentions tck Edwin says straight away "absolutly not" I dont understand why after he had been so honest to Nikko he would suddenly lie. Also a lot of people point to Edwin and tck's last scene together as evidence but did you see Edwin in that scene?? We have scene Edwin in love before, and that was not it, I think it was a scene representing Edwin's growth as a character, he now sees the desperation and one sided-ness of tck's situation and sees himself in it, to me Edwin has the same air as he did when letting Monty down in the swing scene. he literally kisses tck on the cheek and then calls him lonely, I mean if you see that as romantic, that's what your seeing I guess?? But you cannot point at that scene as proof that Edwin reciprocates tck, because it literally proves nothing (plus even if Edwin did reciprocate he is SIXTEEN)
4: The Catking doesn't actually care about Edwin. He only has four interactions with him in the whole show, the closest moment that was anywhere near to him actually trying to get to know Edwin as a person is when he put a spell on him to force him to tell the truth about his other motivations about solving cases, and this only resulted in Edwin being humiliated and feeling bad about himself. He never genuinely tries to check up on Edwin, see if he's doing okay, or show him like any empathy?? When Edwin gets sent back to hell tck says he'll just wait for him to return and sighs calling himself a "romantic" (babe ur just sitting on ur arse doing nothing how is that romantic?? 🙄) meanwhile Charles relives all his trauma in order to get to Edwin, hell even Crystal who doesn't have a great relationship with Edwin faces her evil demon ex in the hope to get a portal to hell, and what are you doing again? NOTHINGG!! If you actually cared about him you would make sacrifices in order to save him from eternal damnation??? Surely you have connections to people who can help him out?? (bt once again im all for people shipping characters just because they seem cute together but ive seen alot of Catwin shippers mentioning how much the Catking cares about Edwin as an excuse for, yk, edwin being a TEENAGER, so I wanted to mention this)
5: LET GAY PEOPLE BE BAD PEOPLE. Like oh my God, not every gay person is good I want evil queer representation I want morally bad gay people!!!! and whenever one appears, like the Catking, people always reduce them down into "oh he's just a lover boy" "aww he's just insecuwwee, he just lonweyy" like really??? Catking shippers are always accusing us of misinterpreting his character but I think you guys are. Like he is NOT a good person for reasons I have mentioned above, why cant you just let him be a bad person??? If Edwin we're a girl would you still ship them?? no, because he's a MUCH older man perving on a sixteen year old who is not interested, but because that sixteen year old is a guy then its ok??? I love the catking as a Character, I find him so darkly interesting which is precisely why is pisses me off sm that catking shippers just erase that dark morally bad side of him, they are making the character more bland!!! He is meant to be an immortal being that doesn't fully care about Edwins emotions and is just in it for himself, his own narcassistic needs. I've seen people say that, "yeah he's a bad person, but he can change, Edwin calling him out in the last scene can help him make that change and then they can loive happily ever after" well I agree with the first point, yeah he can change, yeah I do see a moment of genuine vunrability when Edwin calls him lonely, but that does not take away from the fact that he has done terrible things, he has hurt Edwin, and trapped him, and manipulated him, also EDWIN IS 16!!!
omg I'm sorry for such a long message but I really really really needed to get this off my chest because I am actually so done. Like why tf is half the fandom saying "oh I cant decide between payneland or catwin endgame", "awwww Catwin is so cuteee" I like, I literally cant comprehend it, its insane. And this is just catwin im not even getting into catbird or Cystal x Catking 🤮but this would be like 20 times as long if I got those ships involved omg. If you want to ship the catking with people, please can you ship him with people who are, you know, not minors?? Like literally anyone else please 😭🙏Ship him with Bill Cipher for all I care, pleaasssseeeeeeeee
