He'Brew - New York
Bittersweet Lenny's Rye Double IPA
Double IPAs are always a gamble. For me, I prefer a double ipa to be explosively hoppy with a good amount of malt to create that perfect balance that still leaves you with that dry, bitter taste in your mouth. This wasn't one of those beers. This is definitely an enjoyable beer, but too much of a malt bomb for what I normally would expect out of a double IPA. I probably would try this again, and i'm sure other fans of this style enjoyed this one a lot, but this was not one of my favorites.
Overall: 3.5/5
BEER REVIEW: He'Brew Funky Jewbelation
The sixth member in Shmaltz Brewing's Limited Engagement Barrel-Aged series, Funky Jewbelation features a blend of six Shmaltz beers aged in bourbon and rye whiskey barrels, and dances in at 9.8% alc.
Funky Jewbelation is an expert mashup of Jewbelation 15 (aged three months), Vintage Jewbelation (aged nine months), Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A. (aged one month), Origin Pomegranate Strong Ale (aged 14 months), Reunion Ale '11 (aged seven months), and Messiah Nut Brown Ale (aged 14 months). So, you've got here is a blend of: • a strong ale brewed with 15 hops and 15 malts • a vintage version of Jewbelation • an imperial IPA with a rye malt base • a strong ale with a ridiculous amount of pomegranate • a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers (itself a collaboration with Terrapin) • a fairly straightforward nut brown ale Oh, and they've all been aged for between a month and 14 months in rye whiskey or bourbon barrels.
Coney Island Barrel Aged Human Blockhead - Shmaltz Brewing Co., Saratoga Springs, NY.
ABV: 10.83%
Style: Doppelbock (Imperial American Bock 100% aged in Buffalo Trace barrels).
Drank: 22oz bottle, Sixpoint "Spice of Life" glass.
Season: Rotating.
Pour: Brown, with a small, creamy head. Leaves loose lacing.
Aroma: Sweet malt, dark fruits (figs and plums), some caramel, and faint vanilla.
Taste: Sweet. Dark fruits, molasses, and vanilla. Moves to flavors of oak and sweet malt.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied and dry. Kind of sticky and syrupy.
This one is quite good, if not a bit sweet. The flavors are well-balanced, and the alcohol is nice and warm (though not at all apparent in taste). A well-made beer.
Food pairing: mint chip ice cream, soft, buttery cheeses.
