Of course Dead in the Water has no competition as the top-tier ep of Dean interacting with kids so far. But after watching it yesterday I keep thinking about the bit in Bloody Mary when Dean tells the young girl who accidentally summoned Mary the first time that her father’s death wasn’t her fault. And it’s not just the fact that he takes the time to do that. Beyond that, he:

a). Does not tell her ‘even if that was the case it’s not your fault.’ (Which is true!! But as he knows very well, would take a long time to work through to the point of it feeling true, if she ever got there at all.)

b). Does not tell her that she’s being silly or making things up. Instead he tells her that in all the stories Mary goes after the person who says ‘Bloody Mary’, not someone else in the house, so that can’t have been the cause. 

And see, that’s still a lie; it is something Dean is confused about, but they still start out their research looking for Marys who could fit the story. What that answer does do is acknowledge the fear landscape the child has built and provide a reason that cannot be the case using her logic. He takes her thinking seriously and engages with her on her terms, and in doing so accomplishes so much more than her friends and siblings did by dismissing her fears. 

And it’s just. So kind and understanding, and, well, skilled. Dean understands kids and he understand guilt and he understands trauma. And sure he doesn’t always say the perfect thing, and nothing he says can’t erase the trauma. But helping people to navigate the horror of their experiences is an ability he has cultivated right alongside the hunting and the life-saving.

he may be cranky and an asshole but he actually cares about people, enough to put their needs before his. they are important. they are what matters. and he will do anything to keep them safe and comfortable in his presence.

this obviously goes outside of sexual/nonsexual romantic relationships, into all of his platonic relationships as well. i just
