I’m curious, does idolizing wukong a heriditary thing or is it just a tang bo thing? Does anyone in his family knows that or does his ‘secret’ reveal over time? How does the tang family feel abt it?
Good question, I actually posed it as something "exclusive" to Tang Bo. By this I mean is like Tang Bō's comfort story and characters. Tho an anacronism, he read jttw before he met Chung Myung, and that extrapolated to Tang Bō's own affection towards Chung Myung.
He does see the similarities between them. Not that he sees Chung Myung as a "real life" wukong. He just appreciates this aspect of Chung Myung where anyone else may see him as "unorthodox" or "unrighteous" for not conforming to what's socially acceptable.
I assume the Tang clan conforms to conficianism, while jttw is Buddhist propaganda as much as satire. And due to their social status, the clan member definitely develop some degree of cultural awareness regarding this novel background.
Still, some members of the clan may enjoy the novel regardless of that, but not in a personal level as Tang Bō. Still, for some of my original characters (Tang Chun, and Tang Zhōng), the Bodhisattva Guanyin is an important symbolic figure despite not being Buddhist themselves.
What does others think of this? Well, Tang Bō isn't very open about anything, and people don't really approach him with friendly intentions. It's what ostracism does, no one cares about "the other" enough to humanize him and consider he may have hobbies, likes and dislikes...
So few people would learn about this. The ones that know it let him be, they know Tang Bō enjoys far more questionable readings whatsoever (erotica).
But in the end of the day, as long as it doesn't affect directly the clan they have a "laissez-faire" attitude towards whatever he does.
Meanwhile, Chung Myung is jealous of Bō-ya's fictional crush. And Bō, who has no one else to talk with, info dump Chung Myung every time he has the chance!
