Amber's Christmas Present
Amy dashed into the morgue just as Molly was finishing the last of her paperwork. “Are you done yet? Come on, it’s time to go.”
Molly chuckled, signing the last page and putting it down. “Where are we going?”
“River lent me her vortex manipulator so I’m taking you on an adventure. Girls day out, something totally fun.”
“I thought you were trying to take me shopping.”
“I didn’t promise that it would be in this century. Do you have your coat?”
As Amy had been talking, Molly had pulled off her lab coat and switched into her winter coat so that she was all ready before Amy had asked the question. Amy grabbed her hand, pulling the laughing Molly behind her. "How does a vortex manipulator work?"
"I don't exactly know, but it works and that's the important part. Let's go!"
Amy placed Molly's hand on the strap on her wrist, messing with a few of the buttons as she did so. "I figure we won't be too out of place in the 1920s. And they're bound to have some interesting things."
"Are you sure we should time travel? I mean there are plenty of shops right here."
"Don't be daft. This will be lots more fun. Besides, think of the interesting Christmas gifts you could get for people. It would be unlike anything they had ever seen before."
Molly's thought drifted to Sherlock and Greg, equally difficult to shop for, although for entirely different reasons. That more than anything convinced her. "All right, all right, we'll go. What do I need to do?"
"Hold on." She flashed Molly a smile. "Geronimo." And with that she finished fiddling with the knobs and pushed the button to transport.
A flash and an instant later, they were standing on the same street. But it was unlike anything Molly had ever seen before. Long coats and short hair surrounded her, making Molly feel a little out of place. She tugged on the end of her jacket, but there wasn't anything she could do about it right now. And she liked her long hair. The street in front of her was teeming with cars that she'd only ever seen in a museum or in period films. But they were here, running and no one blinked an eye. This was their normal.
Before Molly could really start to absorb everything that was happening, Amy was pulling her down the streets again. "Well, now we're here, let's get some real shopping done. You need a much better coat for one thing. How long have you had that?"
"I-I don't know. I just-"
"That's what I thought. High time for a new one. Let's start-here." She picked a shop at random. Almost all of them would have the type of thing Amy was looking for. The beauty of the 20s.
They started looking through the shop and Molly almost forgot that they had traveled through time to get here. It felt so similar to many of the other times where Amy had dragged Molly around, trying to 'fix' her wardrobe. Apparently a new coat was Amy's focus today. They had managed to work their way through half the store, Amy vetoing all of Molly's suggestions saying that they were too frumpy or just hideous.
Suddenly, Amy gave an excited shriek. "I found it Molly! Come look come look!" When Molly found where Amy was standing, she was stunned. It was a gorgeous coat. It was a pale green so Molly didn't feel like she would be overwhelmed in it. But it looked warm, comfortable, and just slightly fitted. When she tried it on, she knew this was her coat. Even Amy looked approving.
When they approached the cash register though, Molly was reminded that they were in a different time. She pulled out her money and handed it to the man behind a cash register that she was sure she would later see in a museum. At least money didn't change. She pulled out the correct number of bills and a few coins, laying them on the counter. Without a second glance, the cash register wrapped up the coat and handed it over, counting the change. Then he looked at the date printed on the coins.
"Is this some kind of joke? These can't possibly be real coins." The store clerk looked at them both in suspicion. Amy took one look, grabbed Molly's hand and started to run. "You come back here. Thieves! Thieves!"
They were out the door and down a side alley before the clerk could escape from behind the counter. As Molly gasped for air, Amy fiddled with the vortex manipulator. "Amy, maybe we should take this back. I mean, he's right we used sort of impossible money and I wouldn't want to steal it."
Before she replied Amy slammed Molly's hand on the vortex manipulator and hit the button for time travel. Seconds before the clerk and a police constable came skidding around the corner, they were gone.
Molly found herself once again outside St. Barts, surrounded by cell phones and jeans. The coat was still clutched in her hands, inside its brown paper wrapping. "Amy, we just stole a coat. We should take it back."
Amy looked at her and started laughing. "You have a beautiful coat that you won't be able to find anywhere else except for exorbitant amounts of money. And you did leave the money behind, so it isn't really stealing. They'll just be a little confused for awhile. Besides, you deserve this right now."
"We were supposed to go Christmas shopping. I still have no ideas for anyone else."
