oh i definitely subscribe to the idea that real minatsuki was a tool of gilbert's manipulations especially cause it started when he was so young... i can't remember the line but gilbert said something about laica being so easy to influence and it's always stuck with me and heavily influenced how i see and write the character. kind of tragic and traumatized in his own way while also being a manipulator on his own, one whole clusterfuck of a beautiful horrible man
Not to go on too much of a rant with this but it’s really no wonder he believed whatever Gilbert told him; he grew up completely on his own (except for Izanami) and probably had no idea how human interactions even work. The most ingrained experiences for a person are the strong ones they go through as a child, and for Minatsuki the first significant thing that ever happened to him was the attack. He didn’t even leave his room before. Children internalize the behaviour of the people closest to them while growing up and use the same patterns in relationships for the rest of their lives. Gilbert was the only role model-like adult around Minatsuki after he brought him away from Jaula Blanca. If Gilbert’s way of interacting with another person was, by default, trying to manipulate them (which it was), then it’s obvious Minatsuki would assume (and subconsciously learn) that’s the only way. The main reason why he was easy to influence is because he knew so little about life before; he didn’t have the time and experience to acquire strong convictions or significantly bond with others. He clung onto the only thing he had, aka Gilbert’s bullshit.
