Day 36

Hey guys! Haven’t seen you in a while, I have a lot to tell you. Since my last blog around a month ago, many things have happened. First off, one of my slaves died of starvation about a week ago, oops. Maybe later I might go down town for an auction. Though we lost a slave, our productivity has gotten a lot better. My overseer Jacob has been cracking the whip, literally getting these slaves to work as fast as possible, and I guess you can say a lot of people are smoking Hopkins Tobacco. 

Also I heard some news about this new “Headright System” set up by the London Company giving 50 acres of land to colonists who paid their own way to Virginia. I don’t know how I feel about this. Hopefully it will brings some more financers down here because these cities are dry. Every time I go to the city, I never see anyone that can partake in my business. Oh well, see you next time!

Grateful

Our tobacco has been grown with the finest care by our worthless slaves. It’s amazing! And the best part is, there’s just so may of them! On some summer days, they work slower which angers my husband. He’d give them a good beating.

Our many indentured servants also help grow our tobacco. And so I thank the Lord for the headright system. We paid for these indentured servants to come over here, and in turn, they work for us. And we get 50 acres of land for each of them! We recently got a young boy as our servant. And when he spoke, I was pleasantly surprised to hear his French accent! He’s a hard little worker as well. I wish he had to work for us longer than 7 years because he is actually quite a diligent worker. We get servitude and more land, what more could I ask for?
