His first alert....
The first time a dog gets an alert. Gets that he hears a noise and he is supposed to react to it... is a beautiful thing. People insist on knocking on my door. Like my father I can't hear it. According to my mom he has the exact same hearing aids as me and we both have the same complaints. It's a lot of information our body has been used to not getting. Today he did his first hearing alert. He stood up and looked at me when there was the knock at the door my retired service dog barking confirmed that something was there. I am so excited....it was my onsie PJs. These are the spyro ones and I got giraffes as well. Horward loved them and was giving me kisses and trying to snuggle up to me while I wore them.
I had to go to the post office today to ship my mom Rhodey's old things for his frame, and to return a Wii I ordered for my husband's homecoming that didn't work. I left Howard at home, because of the difference in state and federal One accurate hearing alert (missing it's response) does not a service dog make. I gave him an empty marrow bone which I filled with peanut butter the day before and froze in my freezer. I was gone less than 30 minutes but when I got back you would think that I had just come back from war! Such a sweet loving boy who wants to be with his people.
Today we have continued to work on the basis for Howards alerts. Hitting me with a foot. We have to work on refining these alerts, cleaning up the action so it is one foot hitting me. This is something I have to explain to people, that right now we are rewarding the action not matter who he does it to, or when. We want this to be a behavior he knows perfectly. We'll change the behavior once he has it down to only rewarding at the right alert.
