Her Smile

So I got off work and remembered I needed to go to the grocery store to get milk. When i got to the check out, in front of me was a young mother, I would estimate in her mid twenties. She had a little girl sitting in the grocery cart. 5 years old, blonde hair, blues eyes. As I stood patiently waiting, I noticed that her daughter was signing to her mom. Her mom signed back. The 5 year old child was deaf. I had no idea what they were saying as I had dumped 99% of my knowledge of signing in my early twenties. Suddenly the little girls face turned south. I saw her get upset right in front of me. It was heart breaking. Well, anyone who knows me would tell you, I never know when to keep my mouth shut, so I asked her mother why the little girl got upset. She told me that the she wanted the pink Easter rabbit (you know the ones the stores put right by the checkout to drive parents nuts), she stated that she had told her no, that they could not afford it. I nodded, and mentioned how the stores do that on purpose, and the mother agreed. Once they left the self checkout I scanned my milk and that bunny, swiped my card and out the door I went. I could see the mother and her child at the the back of a small beat up SUV. I walked up to them and as the girl looked up at me, I pulled the bunny from behind my back and handed it to her. She used sign, and when I asked her mother what she said, she told me, “She said, Thank you, I love you.” That about brought me to tears. Here was a mother, with but a few groceries, no junk, just essentials. Struggling, you could see.  A child, whom appeared to not want much. I never could have picked a better time to go get milk.
