allow me to set the scene for you. the year is 1873, and the colorado territory is a land of cowboys and outlaws, gunslingers and cattle ranchers. jake wilder, a cowboy and the owner of heartcross ranch, isn't looking for a wife — he's too busy getting into shootouts with the band of rustlers who aim to steal his cattle. with his two younger brothers by his side, he works from sunup to sundown at heartcross and doesn't mind his empty bed too much.

fifteen miles way, in the frontier town of manitou springs, vivian taylor is a new widow. her late husband was a no-account horse thief who gambled away all their money, and vivian is left empty-handed as she tries to care for her three young daughters. she knows as well as anybody that women don't remain unmarried in the west — she'll need to marry soon, and there's plenty of unsavory bachelors vying for her attention.

when jake rides into town and finds vivian and her daughters threatened by the worst of those unsavory bachelors, he finds he has two choices — marry vivian to keep her safe and provide for her and her girls, or leave her at the mercy of a cruel man who wants more than she's willing to give. vivian's faced with marriage either way, but there's something about this strong, protective cowboy who treats her so gently and offers to marry her just to keep her safe — she takes a leap of faith, and when jake asks to marry her, she says yes.

but despite it being a marriage of convenience and practicality, the brand new mr. and mrs. wilder find that their feelings are quickly becoming anything but practical. if they can survive the outlaws and, even more daunting, find the bravery to finally admit their feelings for each other, they might just figure out how to fall in love 😉
