Kung Lao crosses his arms over his broad chest and watches Kano storm from the room. He has made a deal with the devil, truly, but his grief and loss have transformed into numbness and he cares very little beyond the obvious—strategy. Once a rash young man, the Great Kung Lao’s descendant has become a dangerous tactician and that skill has not dulled during his self-imposed association with the Black Dragon.
Do not kid yourself, he scolds internally. You’ve become one of them. The day Liu Kang died, you gave up. Nothing mattered—and if you want to stay sane, you’ll keep it that way. He follows Kano out, not sparing a backward glance at the slowly exsanguinating body on the floor.
“Everyone has information,” he reminds his… employer, his voice remaining the soft timbre of a trained monk, despite the garb and company that suggests otherwise.

:・゚ ❤️┇Cassie may as well have been looking into a funhouse mirror — everything distorted. Not just reversed but upside down. Teaming up together with Kano? Healing him? From which Mickey Mouse bullshit movie has that come from? But they did so, and she’s working her magic, regardless, fingers carefully wrapping the bandage properly around the cleaned wound as though his hand is porcelain instead of the rough, calloused map of his palm. She notes the hiss, the way his fingers close around hers — heat spreads to the tops of her ears all over again. ❝Sorry — ❞, she murmurs, still frowning, her fingers slowly retracting to return to the gauze. She’d glared at him earlier — expected a funny, snarky comment — had one question to ask but couldn’t let it out. Yet.
Wouldn’t have done it back there without ya.
Now that — she did not expect. Is he complimenting her? She’d not seen that one coming, miles and miles away from her mind — instead she had anticipated a rude remark, something foul that would have had her slap his wound in order to catch him back. There’s an instant where the commander freezes halfway into circling the mercenary’s hand — then resumes. ❝You weren’t so bad yourself — ❞, she admits. They had made a hell of a pair in there; she’d never been in sync to such lengths with anyone but Jacqui — so this was… surprising and perhaps even terrifying. She’s never heard him speak so softly before either.
He calls her Cass — and again there’s that fluttering feeling in her belly like feathers tickling from within. Here’s that funhouse feeling again. ❝You think I look like Black Dragon material❞, she asks, both as a quip and seriously, one eyebrow raised and her mouth quirked into a half grin. She can’t see herself on the wrong side of the law, but it’s not like she’d not fantasied about it years ago before Shinnok’s return. When she had been angry. So — so angry.
She clips the gauze. Inspects her work by moving his hand this way and that. That should do it. And then, finally, she gets the courage to ask her question, that which had pricked at her mind from the get go.
❝You didn’t have to do that — take the hit for me — not that I don’t appreciate it, just….❞, she begins as she sits back on her heels, unable to hold eye contact, so instead she looks at the horizon where the sun has dipped toward the plum night. He could have backstabbed her at any moment, but he didn’t. ❝Why’d you do it….?❞

For the best part of the last ten years, Melissa had made it her mission to overthrow Corneo – to bring him to some sort of justice after all the people he had abused and discarded, to give him a taste of his own bitter medicine. And now that he was gone and hunted by Shinra, it was difficult to say that she felt victorious – true, she was the last one standing, but she could claim the prize if she hadn’t really obtained with her own hands?
The absence of the mafioso could have created a power vacuum for one of his lackeys – but they were too stupid and scared to step up and do something, particularly when Shinra was so adamant in finding the previous ruler of the mansion and presently occupying the building. It felt… Strange to walk around in Wall Market these days, knowing that the shadows were safer and that the threats were fewer.
But the district wasn’t without novelty – in the face of Corneo’s absence, his colosseum had also became vacant. However, the slow and silent days were about to be brought to an end on that night, when a scandalous party was to be held at the venue to commemorate the beginning of operations under new management.
The entertainment conglomerate that controlled most of the Gold Saucer enterprises had decided to expand to Midgar – and it seemed only logical for Corneo’s arena to become their newest addition, seeking to emulate the same success they had in the middle of the Corel desert. The marketing team had been tirelessly working before the inauguration – invitations had been sent to every business owner and high-profile locals, as well as enthusiastic fans of the previous fights, the written note promising a night to remember.
The party had a theme – a masked ball. To celebrate the ‘new identity’ of the place according to the elaborated and expensive-looking invites, and Melissa had to admit they had created a very positive buzz with all these tactics. Well, enough to find herself within the halls of a building she had never set foot before while it was under the Don’s control – at least for the inn proprietress, it indeed felt like a fresh venue, particularly when she had no basis for prior comparison.
She was walking around the place where she supposed people originally had their seats to watch the matches – but they had removed all chairs and created smart arrangements with comfortable chairs and smaller tables, while keeping the actual fighting ground on the lower floor still staged as if someone could indeed be summoned for combat. The place where Corneo used to sit had been changed into something else – probably the place of honor for the new owner to make a speech.
Melissa was nursing a glass of champagne (as good as hers, she wagered – at least for the grand opening they were keeping things classy) in a strapless dark purple gown, the model allowing for a diamond necklace to draw the glances of the guests nearby. Her mask was delicate and feminine, covering the upper half of her face in a model made out of bendable plastic but covered by a black lace surface, with small beads and glitter over the mask that made her honey-colored eyes stand even more.
So far, she had been able to identify a few acquaintances from the district – the masks did it make more difficult, and she was enjoying the challenge of trying and pinning the names to the faces, something that distracted herself enough to cause an accidental bump into a bystander while she moved. An apology left her lips immediately after the incident, but any pleasant smile she had on her face immediately died when she received a light-hearted chuckle in response.
She would recognize that voice anywhere, mask or no mask – it belonged to no one else but the Black Dragon leader, after all.

The pyromancer could not decide if she was impressed or concerned - maybe both. The pinpoint accuracy of Kano’s blind toss made it seem pretty intentional, but surely it wasn’t? Not with the way it hit the bystander’s head so directly... she glanced between the man and Kano with her eyebrows raised, noting Kano’s approach while she still was deciding whether the man needed her help. Probably not - cauterizing cuts covered in alcohol would not likely be a good idea.
“Well, I would be lying if I said no.” she said, meeting his eyes finally. “I suppose I am just happy that I am not him.” she snickered a bit, glad to see the victim seemed to be able to function just fine, aside from being in pain.
“You are the boss around here, it is not my place to question the reason behind it.” As Kano approached she had to tilt her chin to keep up eye contact. “Though I am curious to learn where you learned to aim like that, if it was on purpose.” she said, a smile tugging at her lips faintly.
(starter for @heartrip)
Maldron yawned. His helmet made a thunk when it connects with the wall behind him: boring! Literally, nothing had happened for hours, maybe even days, who the fuck knows really, an undead means that they rarely needed to eat... much less than those that aren’t branded by the mark anyway, so at least several days could have passed and he wouldn’t have noticed.
Maybe it was time for him to get up and off his ass to actually do something instead of waiting for his prey to come to him.
After all, the area that he had made his home was the very edge of this decrepit kingdom. Undeads end up here one way or another, there was only so many places that they could go: so why the fuck so long passed by without anything coming by? Did someone leave another conventional message about his deception somewhere again? Or maybe one of those fools had left their sign down again and their summoner had shown him his trickery -
Maldron holds up his shield to block the blue soul bolt that was shot in his general direction. Yes yes, his neighbors weren’t fond of him, that much he could guess.
