Patriotic citizens were by now bombarding the War Office with ideas for new weapons... There were lots of perpetual motion experts offering us free power, the old favourite of having a battery to drive a motor to drive a dynamo which would in turn charge the battery being an idea which we could bank on receiving almost every day. The death ray merchants were also numerous and gave us a bit of trouble. Most of them proved to be students of H. G. Wells and we often wished he had never thought of arming his Martians in The War of the Worlds with heat rays which shrivelled up everything.
