the bathroom scene in the tv show is a hundred times more devastating than in the books. shane is so angry at ilya but he misses him more than he resents him, so he unfolds under his touch and looks at him with a yearning so entrancing you can't look away. ilya has been pretending for months, sort of encouraged by the thought that maybe he's the only one between the two of them battling scary desires, but shane's unexpected reaction wipes the cocky smirk off his face and the way ilya teases and calls him boring is his attempt at lifting the mood when all he can see are shane's glossy eyes. but shane is not the only yearner in that bathroom, he's simply the one who wears that feeling on his sleeve. the fact that ilya could run away again but instead chooses to tease shane and not resist the sudden urge to kiss him says a lot about how difficult it is for ilya to truly distance himself from shane when they're actually physically close. as long as he's on the other side of the world he can pull it off, but when they're in that bathroom he knows he can't do much about the way he feels. when they're in his suite he tries again, creates distance between them during sex. they don't even kiss. it's obviously no good at this point of their arrangement, they're both in too deep.
