Print Shop Series: Heather Chontos
Join us this Sunday, January 24th to be first to score beautiful prints from our $99 Print Shop on our @shopchairishlive Instagram! We’re featuring 12 artists who have created works exclusively for Chairish, and have a limited number of prints available for sale, starting at 10am PST/1pm EST.
We sat down with one of our talented artists, Heather Chontos, to learn more about her artistic process, and what drives and inspires her creativity.
At the core of Portland, Maine-based artist Heather Chontos’ work is a strong understanding of the intricate balance between color, form and space. Heather imbues a complex layering of hues, texture, lightness, spontaneity, intensity and love in everything she creates. The final product is a harmony of playfulness, sophistication and grace.
Artist Statement:
I am driven by my intuition and the force and energy of its effect on my vibrant color palette and mark making. Similar to myself and my experiences, there are layers, thick and chaotic. There are lines that run fluidly around and around in circles, as there are also short and abrupt marks, giving life to a lack of patience, an unwillingness to stand still. I move forward with my individual works without knowing, but rather trusting my instincts with a distinct clarity. I am inspired by the existence of a dynamic and multi-cultural life that moves quickly. I am influenced by many visual tales that build my story. I explore these stories through these painted abstractions, expressing the layers and depths of my curiosities with every stroke.

Creativity is: individuality expressed without concern for what others think, its grace and its passion.
I am inspired by: I am inspired by chaos...people that know me will understand this statement well. I like to deconstruct chaos and reorganize, but I do this with shapes and color.
My favorite creatives are: I love them all! I am obsessed with contemporary Dutch architecture, modern compositions of cello nocturnes, painters, sculptors, graffiti, scientists, anyone who can find beauty and passion within something and express it well, no matter the discipline.
I would describe my process as: spontaneous.
In my studio, I can't live without: a lot of plastic hard edged cards, like hotel room keys, I paint with them, no brushes will be found in my studio, saves on water too.
The three words that best describe my work: unforgiving, bold, heartfelt.
The era that inspires me most: 1950s/1960s Europe and NYC.
The best advice I've ever received as an artist: practice.
To me, my art is: love.
My prints will look perfect: anywhere! They will certainly be a color burst, but these works look good in modern and traditional spaces alike.
Love Heather’s prints as much as we do? Be sure to follow us and join in Sunday for our Instagram Sale, only on @shopchairishlive!
