「 heaven couldn't wait for you 」
—
"i fought for you the hardest, it made me the strongest so tell me your secrets. i just can't stand to see you leaving," and tiffany can see her mother lying in the hospital bed, the image just as vivid now as it was then— just as jarring too. "but heaven couldn't wait for you," her voice adopts an eery tone now, calm yet haunted. stable but broken. "no, heaven couldn't wait for you, heaven couldn't wait for you."
her training helps the notes sound rounded, brimming with emotion but strong. and strong was what she needed to be as she sang, the memory of her mother flooding in once again.
"i'm not afraid," she once told tiffany. "i had you and your brother and sister and your father," because love was all she needed. tiffany's mother was ready to go on home.
tiffany didn't want her to go. it was the reason she stayed away as much as she did during her mother's final days. the reason tiffany couldn't be by her side even when everyone told her her mother was asking for her, was asking to hear her sing, to see her smile because her mother joked it was like seeing an angel smile when she saw her children smile, which only made tiffany cry more each time she did.
and she cried because heaven couldn't wait.
❝ but heaven couldn't wait for you
no, heaven couldn't wait for you
heaven couldn't wait for you
no, heaven couldn't wait for you
so go on, go home
( padre nuestro
que estás en el cielo
santificado sea tu nombre
venga tu reino
hagase tu voluntad
en la tierra como en el cielo
amen ) ❞
and she wondered now if her family was watching because at this time, they all needed a little guidance. tiffany's was trying to sing to the heavens.

「 heaven only knows 」
—
it starts off with tiffany simply saying the lyrics, the melody slow as lithe fingers linger over ivory keys. "heaven only knows, heaven only knows . . . " and she remembers not too long ago she was asked if she regretted any moment in her life. it's not singing for her mother, that will forever be her chosen moment and it's what she thinks off as she continues the intro, digits falling into place slower now, but deliberate and steady.
"last night was the worst night,
beginning of the end of maybe it began before it, here we go again
things got so dramatic
we said words we couldn't imagine
i don't understand."
and she still doesn't understand why she refuses to sing for her mother. heaven only knows. the room is indistinguishable, dim but the sound resonates well from the piano, crisp and clear as is her voice, unwavering and unyielding. "make this night the best night" she might not have sung for her mother that day but she recalls now the times she did and it must've been her mother's smile that inspired her to sing so much as a child, other than the fun of it all. because her mother had the smile of an angel before heaven took her.
"will you come back to me? heaven only knows. will you come back to me?"
the song fades out, the coda drawing to a close and there's a shot of tiffany smiling before there's a small clip of little 4 year-old fany singing twinkle twinkle little star with her mother. another song builds up in the background until the words are obvious, a soft voice but a firm message.
