Red Bull Heavy Water was wild! The world’s best stand up paddleboarders took on huge swell, thick fog, and heavy tidal flow around San Francisco on Friday in the most intense SUP race out there. The brutal 13.5km course, saw competitors start at Aquatic Park, under the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, paddle through rough waters and 10ft waves and finishing at Ocean Beach.
The men’s title was won by Denmark’s Casper Steinfath, who clawed back a substantial lead from his rivals to take victory for the second time in this event. France’s Arthur Arutkin took 2nd place with Mo Freitas from Hawaii taking 3rd.
Conditions deteriorated throughout the women’s race, forcing the event to be called off before they could finish. Australia’s Terrene Black was the racer who made the most headway in the race, breaking through seemingly impenetrable surf at Ocean Beach and was awarded 1st place by race officials. The remaining prize purse was shared equally between the remaining women taking part
