Hi, just learning the alefbet here. I'm a bit confused with some of the vowels. If I were to be transliterating hebrew I hear, how would I know whether to use patach or kamatz, or segol vs tzereh. And for that matter, what's the difference between chaf and chet? Do I just have to memorize which words use which letter?

Forms of Hebrew- Biblical and Modern
There are many people who want to learn Hebrew. Furthermore they have their own favourite versions of Hebrew. Do not know about versions of the Hebrew language? Do not worry, we will tell you about it.
Hebrew is one of the most ancient languages in the world. Thousands of years ago, the holy Bible was written in the same language as a result of which Hebrew is considered as the most sacred language in the world. For the same reason it is known as Biblical Hebrew. The Biblical Hebrew is the version of Hebrew language in which the Bible was written for the first time. Now when time has passed, the language adopted many changes it encountered while mixing with other languages during these years. The Jewish people who are considered as the first community that belonged to this language went to different places and they thus met people of different other communities and got to know their languages as well. Throughout the years their languages exchanged vocabulary, grammar and other aspects, contributing in the formation of a new version of Hebrew which is these days known as Modern Hebrew. Therefore there are mainly two forms or versions of Hebrew: Biblical Hebrew and Modern Hebrew. Now depending on their preferences and interests, various people want to learn biblical Hebrew and various others want to learn its modern version, and to really know how is Hebrew read.
When people want to know to learn how to read Hebrew, they need to know that the Biblical Hebrew is considered as a hard language to learn as it thousands of years old and has a complicated background. It is richer in every aspect than Modern Hebrew. The modern version is largely based upon the vocabulary of Bible. It is another thing that both of these versions share vocabulary but the meanings have somewhat changed during the gap and updation in the Biblical Hebrew. This is not the same every time. Even when the words do not differ from one another, their semantic ranges are different or they have a different nuance. It shows how Hebrew is changed throughout the years. Similarly, there are chances that syntactic differences mislead people. In addition to this, the Modern Hebrew has all the three forms of tense- past, present and future whereas the Biblical Hebrew have forms that are similar but they do not mean past, present or future anywhere. It has relative tenses whose meanings are derived by and based upon the context entirely.
Something else people should know when they learn how to read Hebrew, is that another distinction is that the Biblical form of Hebrew comprises of several different grammatical rules, different vocabulary and different pronunciation from different geographies. They also belong to different time periods which we can call a base for all the differences between these two versions of the Hebrew language. All of these were all mixed together into a book which is the Hebrew Bible but there too are many varies writing styles within. On the other side, Modern Hebrew, on the other hand was revived by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. His revived form possesses a uniform grammar, matching to some Romantic languages.
