JOKE-OGRAPHY:

1. In this Bible story, Jesus tells a parable about a rich man and a poor man. The rich man lives luxuriously while the poor man, sickly and starving, wastes away just outside his gate. When they both die, the poor man is comforted by Father Abraham in paradise while, just across an impassable chasm, the rich man is trapped in a place of fire and torment. The parable doesn't say the rich man did anything overtly evil in his life. His only implied sin is that, for all his wealth and feasting, he failed to show charity to the poor man right outside his home, and for this, he's condemned. It's a harrowing reminder that failing to do the good we're capable of can be just as bad as doing evil.

--- 1a. By the way, I think Lazarus is the only named character in all of Jesus's parables. Makes you wonder why Jesus bothered naming him... especially when He has a friend that shares that very name. (Thank you, sam, on Patreon, for pointing this out!)

--- 1b. Also, it's interesting that the rich man calls Lazarus by name once they're both dead. Is this just a case of characters in old stories growing in knowledge at the same pace as the reader, rather than having separate awareness? Or could Jesus be implying the rich man was so familiar with the poor sickly man on his step that he knew him by name? (Thank you, sam, for pointing this out as well!)

2. In this cartoon, the rich man asks Abraham why he's been condemned. Abraham explains that the rich man didn't help the poor stranger, Lazarus, who was just outside his door. The rich man argues that, aktshually, Lazarus was no stranger; he was ALWAYS outside the rich man's door, so the rich man knew him well. Abraham stares at the rich man for a moment, then points out that the fact the rich man knew Lazarus so well and STILL NEVER HELPED HIM kind of makes his lack of charity even worse, not better.

Can we talk about how robbed Adora was in S5 in regards to character writing, or just writing in general?

Her conflict with Glimmer from S4? Doesn’t actually get resolved, they never talk about that again. Instead we have a whole episode about Bow being upset with Glimmer, and while valid, why couldn’t Adora get something like that? It would have been nice if she still was happy to see Glimmer was safe, AND still felt some type of way about everything that happened in S4. It would have been nice if Glimmer had told her she could be angry as long as she wanted to, and that Glimmer would be there when she wanted to talk, like she had done with Bow. Mostly because I don’t think Adora has EVER been told that before.

By the way, in the episode I was talking about, Adora says that she punches her feelings out, when no? Adora has never really done any of that. If anything, she’s more introspective.

Adora’s interest in her history and wanting to find out who she is? Horde Prime has apparently long since wiped out the First Ones, and we never even really get Adora’s feelings on apparently being the last member of an extinct race. Especially because the one character who she could have meaningfully connected to and talked about that with, Melog, went to CATRA instead.

Speaking of Catra, towards the end S5 basically speedruns what could have been a whole season dedicated to Catra’s redemption and subsequently Catra and Adora getting together at the end. So now Adora’s story towards the end revolves somewhat around her relationship to Catra, which hurts the story the series was telling about her previously even more.

Me personally, I think it could have been powerful if Adora got with nobody in the end (though I’d still be rooting for Glimmadora), with her and Catra just being friends. Idk, maybe it’s because after the things Catra has done (stripping away Adora’s autonomy for that one episode, opening the portal out of spite, trying to kill her, sending in a spy to f*** with Adora’s relationships and cause discord, torturing her and Swift Wind in that one episode, indirectly being the CAUSE OF ANGELLA’S PSEUDO-DEATH, etc.) I feel like it’d take a while for Adora to see Catra as a friend again, let alone anything more.

But that’s just me.

Anyway, I would have liked it if S5 HADN’T butchered Adora’s writing, but then again S5 wasn’t that great for many characters writing-wise. Not that there weren’t good bits, but still.
