YES THIS. I think it’s less about him being Manipulative Trash and more about him feeling like it has to be that or he wouldn’t understand her being nice or saying she worried about him when he was gone. He has completely rejected the idea that Abby sees actual goodness in him.

I just keep coming back to that time he side-eyed Jaha for GIVING HIM A FREAKING PIECE OF CANDY like ‘clearly you want something in return’ and he was actually sort of right about that. :( He’s made some big strides on the darker side of give-and-take, with the revenge killing and all -- I think he’s moved past that need to return harm with harm. But that sense of karmic balance and cost-vs-benefit still underlies a lot of how he deals with people.

Murphy is very complex but he doesn’t forget what the others did to him so it’s very hard for him to trust a person and to see this person genuily cares for him. Don’t forget what he said in the 2x10, if someone gives you something, he waits something in return. I love this character for this duality because he cares so much for the people but also he knows how people are. He only trusts Emori because she is just like him. BUT he will learn that people can genuily can for him. + remember,he really believed Raven forgave him and she wanted to give him to the grounders. I think he learnt he can trust his people, at least concerning emori and him. He trusts Bellamy but it was a long process :s

...ok I should’ve read ALL the comments before I started responding because I just mentioned that 2x10 line too. ;) Yeah, he is just as cynical about other people’s motivations and sees that in himself, because he’s felt betrayed pretty much every time he *stopped* and thought he could just, like, trust people to have his back. They usually don’t. So if nothing else he has “I helped and would like my return favor now pls” to fall back on. (Either it works and he’s safe, or it doesn’t work and he has two Griffins to yell at.)
