 Chile has a long tradition of winemaking. In recent years, its wines have gathered more attention around the world, both for their quality - and in some cases, their outstanding value. Here we will test two red wines from Chile - a pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon - and assess their quality / price points. Four geographic areas surrounding the Chilean wine-growing region: the Andes Mountains on the east side, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atacama Desert in the north and a series claiers in the south. The barriers isolate Chile, protect vineyards and create a wide range of grape-growing potential regions.Review, Caliterra Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon. The Caliterra Reserva Cabernet is a fairly inexpensive Chilean elections. It stems from the Valle Central region of Chile. Caliterra is one of Chile's major wineries, which produce nearly half a million cases of wine a year.In the glass, showing Caliterra Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep magenta. On the nose, it shows a dark, brooding, charred grapes quality.The palate seems to be both sweet and carbon, which is lightly sweetened, blackened plum fruit on the sides of your mouth. Grease finish, moving to alcohol. Three stars out of five. Consider Cono Sur my last attempt at this so far mostly-meaningless effort.I should mention that I liked the Veranda Pinot Noir from Chile. But two caveats: Veranda comes from another area, and sells for about twice the price of Cono Sur.So, let's see what Cono Sur offers ... In the glass it is easy, smooth, ruby red - sparkling, beautiful, but do not suggesting depth.The nose is promising - but clearly un-pinot-noir-like. It is bright, almost strong - as a brand new beaujolais.Sipping, you notice a ring of Pinot Noir, strawberry and a touch of citric acid. It gives these bright flavors to the mid-palate, then fades quickly to a high frequency, easy finish. Not offensive, but not a worthy contender in my search for the "world's best value pinot noir."
