HEECHUL
The idol's thin, slender fingers tapped on the phone screen imitating the sounds of a horse galloping. His once racing mind was now only filled with you, your smile, the way you pronounced his name when something he had done managed to annoy you.
His hand held the phone to make a couple of calls, searching through his contacts meticulously to ask for some favors.
The last person to be contacted was you.
Your phone vibrated on the bed mattress, his name adorned with cherry emoticons lit up your screen, bringing a warm smile to your face. You had been waiting for his call, especially after wishing him a happy anniversary during the early hours of the morning.
"I thought you'd be too busy to call me right now," you replied, feigning annoyance.
"I just want to know if you have time this afternoon, you know, to come with me to pick up a couple of things before I go back to do some recording," he asked casually.
You looked confused as you put the phone away and stared at the screen, fearing that someone else was on the other end of the receiver instead of Heechul.
You frowned as you read his name on the screen again.
"Can you hear me?" asked the idol, almost shouting in case the volume at which he spoke to you was too low.
"Yes, of course," you hastened to answer. "Will you pick me up?"
"No. I'll send you the location and we'll meet around five in the afternoon," he explained, smiling, imagining the kind of gesture you would be making at that precise moment.
"Mhm. Okay. Is that all you called for?"
"And why else?" he articulated before adding: "See you later. I love you."
That was it. An I love you and then goodbye. You pulled the phone away from your ear, blinking in confusion at what had just happened, you stared at the phone with scrutiny and disbelief. You expected nothing more than a congratulations, a token of appreciation for being present in his life for at least a year.
He had forgotten about it, you reluctantly concluded, there was no other reason that could explain the disinterest. Maybe he hadn't even read your message in the midst of all the notifications that must have flooded his smartphone.
A sigh of resignation came straight from your lungs and your fists clenched tightly around the sheets covering your bed mattress. At least you could see him later, when his busy schedule would allow him to spend a little time with you despite it being your anniversary, his and yours. Something that belonged to both of you, together.
Reluctantly you searched for the most casual outfit you could find in your closet, there was no need to put so much effort into it, not when it was just a simple walk instead of a small anniversary celebration.
You didn't need a big celebration, but just to know if at least he's caring about it, to have some detail for the moment, nothing expensive or showy, just something personal that told you that he knew you perfectly well after spending three hundred and sixty-five days by your side.
The message with the agreed location arrived half an hour early, leaving you with little time to think about what you would do next. Without too much time on your hands, you grabbed your car keys and decided to stop by a bakery before driving to the meeting point.
If Heechul didn't remember the date by seeing you there with a cake, then it would mean that the relationship wasn't as important to him as it was to you.
The singer watched your car approach the parking lot near the start of the Han River tour, but when he saw you get out of it with that look that said "you forgot something important" he knew he'd be in trouble if he didn't move his pieces carefully.
"I went through a cake," you said, holding the box in front of the idol's face.
"We're picking up a suit from the dry cleaners, not visiting our parents," he commented taking the box with the dessert to carry it for you.
There was no hug, not even a 'congratulations', nothing at all. He had definitely forgotten.
You walked holding his hand, clinging to it as if that was the only thing you would get from him during your forgotten anniversary celebration.
After a couple of meters traveled, Heechul had counted at least four sighs that had left your lips and guilt squeezed his heart. He wanted to take you in his arms and fill you with kisses to get rid of the sadness in your eyes, but then the surprise would be ruined and would not have the effect he desired.
"Tomorrow I will have a photo shoot for a magazine," commented the singer trying to cheer up what seemed like a eternal walk around the river.
"Hmm."
Heechul smiled at the monotony of your response.
"I'll see if I can use the suit we're going to pick up," he added, knowing he was being ignored. "The last time I used it you said it was one of your favorites."
"Did I say that?" you questioned in an absent tone. "I don't remember."
Your answer almost made him burst out laughing, but he withstood the impulse and swallowed the chuckle that could scuttle his plan.
His thumb stroked yours, moving gently and steadily as if to relieve your obvious discomfort, but you did not give him the satisfaction of seeing you smile at his gesture. You could not forgive him when he continued to ignore the reason for your discomfort.
"Wait on those wooden benches while I go get the suit," Heechul said, pointing to a couple of seats arranged around the park.
You turned towards the seats and nodded as you walked with thoughts of how perfect the walk would have been if he had just uttered a 'happy anniversary'. You didn't want anything else, you really didn't need anything else.
You sighed one last time, you wouldn't waste your breath again regretting something that hadn't happened. It was painful to know that he didn't care about being with you for another year, but you didn't want to go home with that bad taste in your mouth.
You pursed your lips and nodded at your thoughts, encouraging yourself through your internal monologue. You were so engrossed, completely absorbed in your thoughts and staring at a spot on the freshly mowed green lawn, that you didn't notice anything going on around you.
Heechul watched your contemplative expression from a distance, smiled as you clenched your hands into fists and moved one of them absentmindedly slapping your thigh as you waited for him.
Your mutual friends were there, right behind you arranging some folding tables to have an outdoor dinner, something you and the idol could enjoy for your first year together after several of those present brought you together on different blind dates.
The rapper tapped one of the bench tables with his knuckles as if he were knocking on a door, his gesture snapping you out of your reverie and leading you to stupefaction as a delicate silver necklace dangled in front of your eyes.
"What is this?" you questioned without touching the accessory, just pointing at it in confusion.
"A necklace."
"I know, I mean, what is it doing here?" you shook your head to put your ideas in order. "And the suit?" you questioned, looking at the idol's hands in front of you. "Heechul, if you are cheating on me so you can meet someone else and just on the day of our first anniversary, I swear that I…
Then all those people who had been waiting for your reaction started laughing uncontrollably.
Your gaze moved from your boyfriend to the sound of familiar laughter, when your eyes finally noticed the people around you, Heechul's laughter became audible.
The beaming smiles of your friends, the almost makeshift decorations that were falling apart for lack of a suitable place for them and, above all, a translucent balloon sporting the phrase you so wanted to hear from Heechul's lips:
"Happy Anniversary."
The singer approached you from behind and wrapped your body in a tender embrace that drew you to his chest, right where you could feel the trembling of his body laughing at your reaction. His hands, with a graceful and reverent movement, placed the necklace in the right place, around your throat and with the tiny but glowing charm of a pair of cherries dangling at the level of your collarbone.
"Did you think I'd forgotten?" he asked, raising an eyebrow in amusement as you nodded. "I couldn't. I never could. Happy anniversary."
And with that sentence he turned your body so he could place a kiss on your forehead with a devotion he rarely let you notice.
EUNHYUK
The memory of his last great gift was still vivid in his memory. Every detail was tattooed on his cerebral cortex and he was sure it would be so for the rest of his existence.
Eunhyuk was there, in the park, holding the keychain with a plush doll you had seen in one of those claw machines for pulling out stuffed animals and other toys. Several helium balloons were floating around, tied to the ring of the keychain while you smiled with pleasure at the great and unexpected detail that the dancer was offering you.
It wasn't all that perfect, how could he forget? Behind him a dog, a golden retriever to be exact, barked as if in the middle of a chase, causing Eunhyuk to drop the keychain and it flew off into the sky thanks to the balloons.
They both stood there, watching longingly as the gift flew farther and farther away until it was lost from sight.
The memory would haunt him forever, just like the other two times he tried to surprise you. He definitely must have provoked the wrath of the gods because he couldn't explain how everything ended up a disaster, no matter how much effort he put into every detail.
So, to avoid any chance of failure, he had called his sister so that she would be in charge of organizing the best anniversary celebration. One where he would not contribute a single idea. One that would be foolproof.
The problem was that Sora didn't know you. You had only stayed together a few times and the time had never been long enough to even consider yourselves close.
The job was going to be complex, Sora knew that well and had warned his brother about it, but he trusted her, he had even made a list of things you liked. On it paraded dishes, colors, movies, songs, places and objects that you considered precious to you.
While she was trying to do something that would satisfy both of you, Eunhyuk was with you, strolling amidst playful laughter and the distant sound of the district with street food. You honestly didn't expect him to remember the date of your first anniversary, not because he was incapable of memorizing things like that, but because he had been so busy that perhaps the memory of the anniversary had been relegated to a corner in his mind. But there both were, sharing a skewer of fish cake and feeding on tteokbokki.
The streetlights illuminated you in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere, as if only the two of you were walking down those streets on your way to your apartment.
The breeze carried by the wind from the approaching storm clouds was cool and welcoming. The atmosphere was working miracles on that special night.
"No anniversary surprises this time?" You asked, suppressing a smile as you remembered the incidents of the last two occasions in which he had wanted to have a detail with you.
"Nothing at all," he confirmed proudly.
Maybe you two were the only couple who should refrain from surprises and celebrations, maybe that was part of your charm as a team of unlucky people in the matter.
You didn't want to admit the slip-up of your own anniversary surprise. You had ordered a new album of his favorite singer but you hadn't read the delivery times, so surely your gift was still flying somewhere in the world.
"That's good," you agreed, nodding as you took a bite of the fish cake, "so we can go straight to bed and rest after such a hard day."
Eunhyuk smiled, not at your comment but at the thought of the kind of surprise you both would find when you opened the door of the apartment.
His hand gave yours a slight squeeze, a small slip as he tried to contain his excitement. It would not only be a surprise for you but for him as well. Sora's details had always upped the surprise factor, so he wondered what kind of celebration she had arranged.
Maybe the house would be overflowing with balloons with a pool full of plastic balls, or maybe she cleaned up to give you a pet suitable for your work schedule. Anything was possible when it came to some celebration organized by his sister.
Step by step the idol's heart was racing, you could tell by the almost imperceptible sweating on his hand or the goofy smile that adorned his face. He had been like that since you started walking to your apartment.
"Do you plan to do anything at dawn?" you asked to fill the comfortable silence in which you were both walking with your fingers intertwined.
"There is no plan," he confessed, thinking that he should cancel the practice he would have with Kyuhyun.
"Then we could go out for breakfast before my work schedule starts," you suggested as you climbed the steps you knew by heart. It was exactly twenty before you reached your floor.
"Sounds good. We'll do that tomorrow."
Your hand slid up the cover of the digital lock and your fingers typed in the password without looking at the digits. It was all part of your routine, something you hadn't needed to calculate in detail for years.
When you opened the door, the shadows cast by candlelight caught your attention. You blinked trying to assimilate what you were seeing, and Eunhyuk had to suppress a gasp of disbelief when he observed the state your apartment was in.
Several heart-shaped balloons floated against the ceiling, red streamers hung from the ceiling and decorative foil curtains covered the walls of your living room.
The candles looked quite romantic and the huge teddy bear with a neatly decorated box of chocolates was a clear sign that it was supposed to look just that, romantic.
"What is all this?" you asked, torn between joy and astonishment.
You didn't understand where all this had come from if Eunhyuk had practically been working just like you. Where had he found the time to do this? You had no idea.
"A surprise for our anniversary," he said, not very convinced of his own words.
"It's so…" you paused to think of a word to describe it "...sudden."
It was then that your fingers came to rest on a piece of thin paper folded in half, the only thing on the tablecloth.
The stiff, satiny texture of the paper made you admire it along with the perfect calligraphy with which your name was written on the front of what was presumably a card.
You were sure that it was not the dancer's handwriting, so there was also a certain intrigue that forced you to open the letter halfway.
"Oh my God," was the only thing you managed to articulate before the words got stuck in your throat.
Eunhyuk's smile slowly faded as he saw your reaction. Your hands were shaking as you held that paper between them and your eyes soon filled with tears that welled up without you being able to blink them away.
"I don't know what Sora wrote there but…
You ignored his words and quickly hugged him around the waist, resting your head on his chest and sobbing while you mumbled something he couldn't understand.
If Sora had gone too far with some joke he would make her go there right away to offer you an apology.
"You said there would be no surprises," you moaned, your voice a little steadier, "you made me think you hadn't planned anything special."
"Mhm," he murmured as he stroked your hair with rhythmic and delicate movements, allowing you to find comfort in his touch even though he couldn't understand why you were crying.
"Is the ring custom-made for me?"
The question forced Eunhyuk to separate you from his body holding you by the shoulders, his hands slid down your arms until they reached your hands to snatch the card that had made you cry.
Your eyes widened, threatening to pop out of their sockets as he read the contents of the card. Inside a ring was taped to it while a "Will you marry me?" could be read in the clearest, most beautiful handwriting he had ever seen in his life.
Eunhyuk had to take a deep breath to keep from fainting. This time Sora had outdone herself, more than that, she had really surprised you both.
Pressing his lips together, he took the card and knelt there in front of you. He peeled off the ring and offered it to you with devotion, as if it had been planned detail by detail by him.
While you nodded, cried again and showered him with kisses, Eunhyuk only thought of how he would make his sister pay for it.
RYEOWOOK
The singer swayed his hips to the rhythm of the music that was barely audible in the chaos that was the kitchen. The sautéed vegetables, the boiled egg, the rice cooker halfway through cooking two servings of rice and the coffee beans patiently waiting to be ground were all that kept the idol busy.
He had decided to get up early so he could prepare a couple of things before you woke up, it was his anniversary, the first of many to come and he wanted to organize a memorable event.
The oven chimed its timer, warning that the chocolate muffins were ready. Ryeowook stopped his dance to pull out the pan with the twelve muffins in it. It seemed impossible that he alone had prepared everything that could be seen in the kitchen, but it had been worth it to have spent so much time in there.
"Good morning," you greeted, stifling a yawn that caused your eyes to fill with tears. "The kitchen smells delicious Wookie, I think my stomach woke up before my brain did."
The still sleepy tone of your voice and your slow yet uncoordinated movements made the idol smile warmly.
"Go wash up and go back to bed, we can have a nice breakfast there today."
"No way. I don't plan to go around gathering crumbs and washing grease off the sheets," you explained with a pout, "I'll take care of setting the table after take that shower."
And without giving room for discussion, you walked to the restroom so you could take a bath before starting your anniversary day.
While you were still in the middle of a relaxing shower, Ryeowook was trying to tidy up the small dining table. A lace tablecloth, the pristine glasses containing the drink that bubbled thanks to the mineral water, the chopsticks decorated with small ribbons that he had gotten for the occasion and only the most complex thing was missing: plating.
When you emerged from a cloud of steam and essential oils, your body found its place right behind the singer, wrapping your arms around his waist and placing your cheek against his back to soak up the scent of his cologne.
"Happy anniversary," you murmured, carving your cheek against him as if you were a kitten looking to be cuddled.
"Thank you for staying with me for a whole year."
"You got me with your delicious chocolate cupcakes, after tasting them I couldn't stay away from you even if I wanted to," you declared before planting a kiss against the singer's back, right in the middle of his spine.
"Then you'll be happy to know what dessert is."
Your gaze traveled around the kitchen, searching for the fluffy chocolate bread without success.
While you were scanning around for those tasty pastries, Ryeowook began to place the food on the plates he had bought just for the feast.
In a newly acquired small vase, he placed his three favorite flowers in your favorite color to decorate the table. Everything looked just as he had imagined it.
He carefully carried the plates from the kitchen to the dining room, taking care that nothing fell, fearing to ruin the decoration if he spilled the vegetable cream he had prepared for you.
When you both sat down to eat the hearty breakfast, the singer enjoyed your reactions and compliments to his food. Sweet words and demonstrations of affection were not lacking on the table.
Once the morning came to an end, with the sun radiating its heat on every exposed surface, Ryeowook took a seat on the couch right next to you. His hands held a book while you distracted yourself with your phone, watching videos and sending a few messages.
Your fingers typed on the mobile device with that clattering of your fingernails against the glass of the screen while the vocalist stole a few glances, sometimes catching you smiling and sometimes making some indecipherable expressions.
Cautiously, the singer closed the book, stood up and, without warning placed an arm behind your back and another one under your legs so he could lift you in his arms princess style. You let out a squeal and laughed as you wrapped your arms around his neck to keep from falling.
Between laughter and kisses, Ryeowook took you to the bedroom to gently place you on the mattress. Once lying next to you, he decided to hug you against his body, squeezing your legs between his to force you to stay by his side.
"What's this all about," you asked, looking up to watch him from your place on his chest.
"I want to rest with you," he whispered in a sleepy tone.
The vocalist closed his eyes and allowed his breathing to slow down without loosening his grip on you, on the contrary, he held you a little tighter, as if he was afraid that you would abandon him in his own bed.
The slow beat of his heart carried a hypnotic rhythm, a cadenced sound that caused your eyelids to close almost involuntarily and, in the midst of your tiredness and lethargy you could have sworn you heard Ryewook humming in whispers to lull you into a deep sleep.
"I love you," you managed to mumble in your sleep.
"I love you more," Ryeowook hummed, smiling indulgently, patting you lightly against your back to relax you. "Happy anniversary"
