Nothing
I lied in bed with my eyes closed. Through my lids, I could still see a red glow, meaning the damn sun was shining through my window. With a curse under my breath, I rolled over on my side, my back now facing the window. I started to get comfortable in this new position when I heard my door creak open. I stiffened. I had no pets to push the door open, no housemates to come in to look for anything. I automatically decided I just hadn’t closed it properly. It was better than the alternative my mind was screaming at me.
Before I could even try to relax, I felt the weight of another person pressing down on my mattress, causing the springs to groan in protest. My heart started beating faster as I felt the muscles of a well- toned chest and the ripples of abs against my back. I kept my eyes squeezed shut.
The pressure of a kiss was at my temple right before a voice, just as smooth and rich as melted chocolate, whispered “Hello, love,” in my ear. My usual response would’ve been a causal “Hey babe,” but I kept my mouth closed. I felt a hand trail down my arm, only stopping to give my much smaller hand a slight squeeze. “Rella, why are you ignoring me?” That familiar voice sounded so hurt that I couldn’t help but reply.
“Cause,” I barely whispered. I felt his hand move from mine to my face, tilting it to face him.
“Open your eyes,” he told me.
“No,” I breathed. I could feel his fingertips tracing my jaw-line.
“Why not?” He asked dejectedly.
I winced at the sound of his voice. “Cause,” I responded slowly. “You’ll be gone as soon as I do.”
“No, I won’t,” he assured me. “I’ve told you, I’ll be here as long as you want me to be.”
“Promise?” I demanded.
“Promise.” On the last syllable of that word, my eyes flew open, showing me exactly what I feared to see:
Nothing.
