look, I don't like to engage in drama by making callout posts like this, but because of the ongoing war I think it's relevant. I've seen a lot of you ignoring the allegations or being uneducated on these issues, so I'm making this post to spread the word. Before I begin, remember that I don't condone the harassment of any people mentioned in this post. Now that I've said that, here are the reasons why you should not support the current Grand Pensionary, Johan de Witt-
okay that's enough, this is just an excuse to talk about some satirical pamphlets regarding our good friend Mr. de Witt.
In the latter half of 1672, around the time of the de Witt brothers' deaths, several anonymously published pamphlets of a similar format were circulating. For context, it was a relatively common practice at the time for the contents of one's library to be listed out for auction shortly after their death. These pamphlets are a play on that and instead include lists of made-up books in the library of Johan de Witt that are references to things he's allegedly done, as well as some entries about his brother Cornelis de Witt too.
(from left to right, top to bottom: Catalogue of books in the library of mr. Jan de Wit, by his disciple the pensionary Vivien,Appendix of the catalogue of books from mr. Jan de Wit, consisting of a batch of curious and secret manuscripts, which will be sold in the hall of the Hague, Monday 5 September 1672., Key, unlocking the bookcase of the Witte library. With its appendix. In which the obscure names of the books will clearly be exposed and disclosed. By J.B. Librarianus. In The Hague,Dortish and Hagueish Wednesday and Saturday. Or additional disclosure of the library of mr. Jan de Witt, being a dialogue between an inhabitant of Dordrecht and an inhabitant of The Hague)
While it's unknown when exactly the pamphlets were each published, or whether they were published before or after the deaths of the de Witt brothers, the Catalogus mentions Jacob van der Graeff, one of the four men who made an attempt on Johan de Witt's life on June 21, 1672, the pamphlet would have to have been published after that date. The Appendix also specifies the hypothetical date of auction for de Witt's books to be on September 5, which is after he died, though it could have been simply been chosen due to how badly his public reputation had already suffered.
Some of the entries in the pamphlets include:
“Political magnet-stone, by the same author [Johan de Witt]. Teaching how one should produce and maintain conspiracies and schemings in all cities and councils in order to keep persons of his maxims in all offices”
“Cromwell’s crocodile tears, by the same author [Johan de Witt]. Being a lamentation on all the blood-shed, the killing and injuring, the crippled and mutilated people, including widows and orphans, resulted from the three English wars. Only started in order to keep Mr. Jan in governance”
“The perfect financier/money-lender or profiteer without swindle, by the same author [Johan de Witt]”
Additionally, some real books from republican publications are included, as well as the work of Baruch Spinoza specified to be "by the apostate Jew together with the Devil in hell, and published with the knowledge of Mr Jan and his mates"
Another accusation of the pamphlets, which deviates from the more political and ideological focus of other entries, is that of de Witt's alleged treatment of a former lover.
“Mr. Jan with his ‘klopscheentje’ (little violin) […] representing the nightly amusement of the Raemstreet, with comments by miss Coljer"
This is further expanded on in a different pamphlet as:
"the treatment on the liberties and correspondences by Mr Jan with Miss Coljer, a cousin of the lawyer Van Andel, who was lodged in de Raemstraat together with De Witt, who was also still a lawyer in those days. The whole world thought that he would marry the girl, but when he unexpectedly became a pensionary, he sacked the sweet maiden. Because she was already pregnant he had to convince a gentleman from Dordrecht to marry her by promising him great favours. The ‘klopscheentje’(being a euphemism for genitalia) was a certain manner of playing during the many nights they spent together, mixed with some other sweet movements"
Not only is he corrupt (allegedly), he also abandoned his pregnant girlfriend (allegedly!!!)!
While the various book catalogue pamphlets served to accelerate de Witt's fall from grace in the public perception, they existed as statements on his already poor reputation at the time, and it was not long after their circulation that Johan de Witt and his brother were rather infamously killed and partially eaten by an angry mob. What I mainly find interesting is how wide a net is cast by the accusations, ranging from some relatively more well-founded concerns about the impacts of his policy, to tying into antisemitism, to accusations about his personal immorality (which, as far as I know, do not have a great deal of evidence). So, yeah.
I’ve seen some people make reversed roles DE and I wanted to make one
Kim’s never grew past his undercover juvie days and now he’s an edgy and too old for punk rock. Also hc that kim has an undercut bc the hair around his temples doesn’t comb easy
