It’s not everyday that an anthropologist is featured in the New Yorker, but the 12 June 2021 edition of that mag has a long feature on Heidi Larson, who studies the cultural dimensions of vaccine rumors
Larson has a Ph.D. from Berkeley, where she studied with Gerald Berreman, John Gumperz, and Alan Dundes. I have not read a single word of her work but with that sort of genealogy it looks like she is taking the folklore/oral literature/linguistic anthropology lens (Gumperz, Dundes) and applying it to a topic of political economic importance (Berreman). Sounds fascinating and important!
