She's cool. He's Hot. She's from the Valley. He's not. A girl from the valley and a boy from Hollywood find love, despite the meddling of her friends and ex. An 80's update to Romeo and Juliet (the characters even have the same initials - Randy/Julie), the music, wardrobe, sets....the valley girl accent Loryn demos at the mall in the beginning. This movie's actually connected in several ways to Francis Ford Coppola (His nephew #NicolasCage, in his 1st role under the Cage stage name, Julie's parents were actors often used by his American Zoetrope, Coppola and the director were friends, but she hadn't met Cage before this movie to know their connection). The contrast between the valley (the mall, school, Stacey's party, the health food store, the pastels and preppy clothes) and hollywood (the drive down the stripe, The Central, the red/black lighting; Randy and Fred's outfits at the party actually mirror each other: red over black vs black over red) was interesting. I think the fillm was well cast, Cage and #DeborahForeman worked well together, Julie's parents were pretty rad, Fred and Randy were a good match (glad Judd Nelson/Eric Stoltz weren't used), Fred and Stacey worked (his first line to her outside the party😂👍🏼) Though released 33(!) years ago, it's a timeless tale of opposites attracting. Agreeing with Coolidge, I'm glad the producers went w/a female director who not only understood/could convey "valley girl" but added a female perspective to the film in general. The inclusion of the Tommy/Loryn hookup added a darker element to the film and another layer to her character. The girls dancing in Stacey's room, the driver's ed scene, the montage of Randy/Julie hanging out, the prom. Coolidge asked Cage to remove his chest hair, the world got that V...smh. #tripendicular #IsThisIn3D? #NoButYourFaceIs #ssmovieof2016 #KingsAndQueensDontGrowOnTrees #ElizabethDaily #EGDaily #MichaelBowen #CameronDye #HeidiHolicker #MichelleMeyrink #TinaTheberge #LeePurcell #RichardSanders #DavidEnsor #ThePlimsouls #comedy #romance #80s writers: #WayneCrawford, #AndrewLane director: #MarthaCoolidge movie of 2016 number 45) #ValleyGirl
