Stomach (Heisig Kanji 29)

The moon/month kanji sometimes means "organ" or "flesh" or "body part" when inside of another kanji, so think of your organs as little moons. Or think about menstrual cycles occuring once a month.

1. The rice field (田) is harvested once a month (月) to get food for my stomach.

2. Rice field organ. It's the body part where the rice is stored.

Since I'm done with RTK very very soon, I decided to order the N4 and N3 books I've been hearing so much about! Together with NukeMarine's Anki decks of those books, they will be very interesting to use.

I've been making my own Anki cards for RTK and while it's been working absolutely great, it will be nice to have a finished deck from the start. I'll probably tweak it to my liking though.

I also got some midliners and I love them so much. The colors are so soft. Bought the dotted whitelines as well. Now sure if the dotted ones are new, haven't seen them before!

A friend of mine uses this as her motivation tool - a giant poster of kanji that she highlights as she learns. I am considering doing this, too. I can just feel how excellent it would be to mark of things that I've learned. She's using the heisig method, which I know is not without controversy. For those of you studying kanji, in which order do you learn them and how did you choose?

Generation (Heisig Kanji 28)

Heisig has this one listed as generation, but like most kanji it's a little complex. Look it up on jisho or something. Anyway, mnemonic time.

1. To me, this looks a bit like a basketball stand and hoop - so just imagine an entire generation dunking you into one :o)

2. More boringly, it also looks a bit like a swing in a tree. So "This swing has been in my family for generations".

Rising Sun (Heisig Kanji 27)

Heisig loves his baseball, but for those of us who have no idea what the hell he’s on about, here’s a simpler mnemonic.

The sun (日) rises at nine (九)

The least useful use for this kanji but my favorite is 旭蟹, known in english as the red frog crab. Here’s a picture of him

You wouldn’t forget him right? He’s the rising sun crab :o)

Kanji study tip!

I've always hated how much paper I waste when doing my kanji reviews on Anki, and I just realised that my good old 3ds has a great solution for that!

Basically I just use Flipnote 3D to sketch down the kanji using a thick brush, and once I'm done I just press X to erase it. It's perfect!

(My stroke order was a little odd in the video because it was difficult to record and write at the same time haha.)

My setup! I like to write down my mnemonics directly into my book, so that I can easily find stories without having to look it up on the net. Writing the stories down also helps memorise it. Oh my wall I have a chart of the heisig kanji. As I progress I highlight them. It’s sooo satisfying seeing them go yellow. 👐

On my 3ds I’m using Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten when I want to learn more about the keyword. It’s an old software but I love it to bits.

Gaming mice aren’t just for gaming! I’ve programmed some buttons on mine to copy, paste, and hit enter. That way I can copy, paste, and search for a kanji without reaching out for my keyboard. It’s a small change, but if you study for hours on end it makes a big difference! ♪
