kanji etymology crash course #1
Kanji for “happy” is 幸, but it’s original meaning is closer to “good luck”. Seems legit, okay, but the etymology is rather unusual, so to speak. It’s original shape is meant to represent a man wearing handcuffs.
In ancient China, crimes penalties were usually physical punishments, so if a person was just imprisoned instead, it was considered to be great luck. So escaping the more gruesome punishment brought relief and, well, happiness. That’s how the meaning evolved.
伏見稲荷大社は人気観光地です。京都にあります。 Fushimi Inari Taisha is a popular tourist spot. It is in Kyoto.
友達と行きました。稲荷駅まで電車に乗りました。 I went (there) with my friends. (We) took the train to Inari Station.
賑やかて、綺麗です。たくさん人がいました。 It is very lively and beautiful. There were lost of people.
訪問するときは、早く行った方がいいです。 When visiting, it is better to go early.
10,000以上の鳥居があります。会社と個人が鳥居を寄付しました。 There are more than 10,000 torii gates (there). Companies and individuals donate the gates.
寄付者の名前は鳥居にあります。一つ小さい鳥居は400,000円かかります。 The donors names are on the torii gates. One small torii gate costs 400,000 yen.
稲荷山の登るのが少し難しかったです。でも、楽しかったです。 Mount Inari was a bit difficult to climb. But it was fun.
