mali is what we in the states like to call an unhappy little accident. her mother never really wanted to be a mother but shit happens when you party naked and lo and behold 9 months after her first missed period, mali popped out like a screaming little demon.
she wasn’t really cut out to be a mother and mali was nothing but an inconvenience to the plans she had laid for herself so mali was shipped off to live with her grandparents until her mother decided she had need of her.
she was raised in the circus. she started off doing the high flying arts like the trapeze and tightrope walking but is also a bit of a contortionist.
which was all fine and dandy until her grandparents died in a work related accident when she was 15. but it was all great bc her mom decided to pop back into her life at that precise time right ??

they worked their way around europe, running one con or another which mostly involved mali’s mom grifting her way into a situation and mali being the one to lift the goods
she had a bit of a head for flinging herself off of buildings on cables and stuff like that. total adrenaline junkie. not really into the finesse of grifting but she could do it when need be.
it was a great little system until her mom picked the wrong mark to play a long con on. nothing went wrong, per se, her mother still walked out with more money than she could shake a stick at but mali came out the real winner when she ran away with his most prized posession; his daughter. and also gained her freedom from her mother in the process
it was a fun filled year and honestly i should probably change when she joined up with the yokai but i committed to 4 years and mama didn’t raise no quitter so we’re just going to pretend time is a little more liquid in this universe ksksks
they eventually split up and mali joined up with the yokai bc demons should always travel in packs and practice the use of the Buddy System.

anyway! wolfgang liu, colloquially known as puppy or pup to friends and allies, comes from the grittier streets of shanghai. he was raised on petty thievery and small time crime, an angry kid with nothing to lose and everything to prove.
he clawed his way up in the world and eventually became involved with black market auctions, which led to him earning many contacts, and — at a point soon after having left china for japan — a position within the yokai.
can fight, and will fight dirty, but rarely chooses to as a first response. guns and knives are familiar tools to him, but he much prefers to talk (aka lie or bargain) his way out of trouble than to exert the effort of raising a hand.
likes to think he’s two steps ahead of everyone at any given time, but really, puppy’s strength is more in improvising. he can plan and he can scheme, but he shines brighter in the moment itself.

hana grew up in the big city of seoul, and honestly, she practically raised herself. with an absent father and a good for nothing mother, she was forced to mature at a young age. most of the time she would cook her own meals in the empty apartment, study like crazy, and go to sleep only to repeat the cycle everyday.
now, she wasn’t well off from her family because they were out doing their own things most of the time, but because of her looks she ultimately was treated like a princess by classmates from elementary to high school.
she was very careful never to reveal her true family structure to anyone else, so they would just assume after seeing her new makeup and accessories she was wealthy.
it was supposed to be a one time thing. hana had always been great at strategies, and when her so-called friends wanted to shoplift some expensive makeup, she easily obliged—after talking herself a deal of them pocketing half and her walking away with half as well.
she made such a plan that none of the cameras would see them at the angle at which they were stealing. it worked out in the end and while she was onlooking the whole operation, she felt a rush that she never felt before. it was something different in the tasteless cycle of her life.
change was coming faster than hana expected, and soon it was getting bigger. more makeup, clothes, handbags, but never jewelry. jewelry was something too risky, even for her. but one faithful day in her last months of high school, hana devised her best plot yet. it was full-proof. all that was left was to assemble the team, and they would be in and out. she honestly just needed the money for her plans to go to college in the states, away from her shackling life, but lied to the classmates that were up for it. she made up a lie about how it was all just a game- like some sort of escape room. the incentive for the students was a cash prize she claimed to be at the end and signed autographs from famous idol groups.
hana scammed them so hard, taking all the jewels and selling it for twice the value. she ended up making a revenue of 3 million US dollars.
however, the students that eventually realized what went down went hunting for her without police because bro they literally committed a crime by accident lol dumbasses ( hana rly picked the dumbest bunch that would j do what she said )
as smart as hana was, the money was stored in the apartment that she thought no one entered except for her. but, she was wrong, and her parents paid her a visit just days after the heist. they found the money, robbed her ( IRONY? KARMA? IDK ! ), and left a mere 40k for her to live the rest of her life on her own with. the apartment was put up for sale, and she found herself on the cheapest flight to japan after graduation.
she joined the crew out of self interest and honestly was in it for her own cut for about two years. ig after that long with them she grew a lil heart and finally accepted them as people that she can relate to and would lw take a bullet for. in the beginning it was all about the goal, but now it’s about the goal and safety more than anything.

BACKSTORY.
faye was born into a nuclear family esque situation. a dad, a mom, a brother, a dog & herself. her dad was ceo of an entertainment company & was the product of a rags to riches coming to america story. her mom was yr typical xanax addicted trophy wife who was never sober to avoid smelling other women’s perfume on her husband.
her brother and her dog were the only “normal” people in her life. she loved her older brother more than anything else in the world. he was the only person who saw faye as a human being instead of daddy’s little trophy daughter.
she was expected to be the best at absolutely everything. her grades were perfect, she can play several instruments and speak multiple languages fluently. she’s excellent at small talk and sitting still and looking pretty instead of being heard. she was captain of her cheer team and president of the student body in high school. she was srsly pitch perfect in every way imaginable.
her dad cheating on his wife and being verbally abusive and emotionally dismissive of his daughter was hollywood’s worst kept secret. everyone knew what went on behind closed doors but nobody said anything.

one night her father had been absolutely shitfaced and was ripping faye a new one. he couldn’t stop yelling about how a daughter was his greatest disgrace and how her everything would never be enough to appease him
so she took off in the middle of the night and her brother was right on her tail because he was terrified if something bad happened to her esp after what happened last time he left her alone.
they had run into a trio of men who were sleazy and armed and one punch led to another led to a gun being shot in the middle of the chaos. which led to anguished cries for help, shaky hands dialing 911, an ambulance arriving seconds too late, blood stained clothes, and little faye all alone again.
instead of grieving like normal parents, her father turned it into a media frenzy. politicians turned it into a campaign. money was made by dragging a dead boy and parading him around like a fucked up jackpot of sorts.
faye went on a vigilante quest of sorts and “handled” the trio that took away her only source of happiness. it’s what earned her a reputation via the crime related world. so pretty, so violent.

biography.
born and raised in korea.
parents spoiled him and his sister to death and made sure both of them had everything they needed to be happy.
however, whenever him & his sister were young, they lost their parents to a house fire and they were forced to go into the foster care system.
he wouldn't allow him & his sister to be separated, so they ended up being in the system for a long time until an american family took interest in both of them.
and before they even realized what was going on, lex & his sister were being shipped off to the states to meet their new family.
things were... different there, their new parents still spoiling them to death but everything around them was completely new and strange.
n bc of that, and because of the fact that lex couldn't communicate with his new parents, he began to rebel.
he started sneaking out of the house, breaking into places he shouldn't have been in.. going to parties even when he was underage and all sorts of things like that.
but he took an affinity to anything that had to do with picking locks, noticing that it kept his mind focused all while continuing to be able to 'rebel' in various sorts of ways.
after that, he focused on that, buying locks of all sorts until there wasn't a thing he couldn't break into.
however, the standard locks started to become boring, technology starting to be more and more prominent in the world so he started to teach himself how to hack as well.
not just into things, but how to 'pick' technologically advanced locks and everything like that.
he started to become so interested in that lifestyle, that he went to trade school for it.
but what he didn't expect was to meet someone there in the process, lex falling head over heels the second he laid eyes on them.
and god, he was smitten. ready to marry them within six months of meeting them. after proposing on a date and them saying yes, things were starting to kick into gear.
soon after, the wedding was planned and a date was set, but the wedding would never happen and lex wouldn't be able to spend the rest of his life with them.
his fiance was taken from him in a car accident, one he blames himself for to this day because they were headed to meet him to talk about the possibility of adopting a baby bc they couldn't have one & bc lex knew what it was like to be in the foster care system and wanted to be able to pull someone else out of that situation.
after that, alexander began to let his grief consume him, finding his home to be a bar stool at the nearest bar, drinking his sorrows away until someone practically had to carry him home.
that's when he met the mastermind of the crew, the other being nice enough to drive lex home from the bar one evening due to how intoxicated he was.
the mastermind happened to catch onto the fact that lex was very much into picking locks, into breaking into things that 'couldn't' be broken into and so he offered lex a job. quick money, no one would know it was lex at the end of the day and a reputation that'd soar for years to come.
it was then that lex's life started to turn around ever-so-slightly, becoming the best ( and only ) safe cracker that the yōkai had ever seen.
he started to grow happier, or so it seemed.
lex started to hide his grief, started to pretend he was just a happy-go-lucky goof ball on the outside while continuing to drink himself to sleep at night just to be able to get some sleep at all.
but he tried to control it as much as he could, tried to keep it inwards and not let it effect him or his job, and he never did.
alexander was/is a completely different person when he's on a heist & when the crew is all at HQ together.
the only person that knows about lex’s sister and fiance is the mastermind, though he does often send big chunks of his cuts to his sister so that his niece and nephew can remain happy, healthy and equally as spoiled as he and his sister were.

was born to a high-energy c.e.o. named yeonjun jung-kang, and her trophy husband jisung kang in the hills of los angeles. never could live up to her mother’s expectations - which were impossibly high. while hyeyeon did her absolute best to meet her mother’s requirements ( learning languages, playing instruments, staying healthy, and anything else she asked ), it was never quite enough. after she made the highest possible score on her ACT and also did well on the SAT, her mother decided to send her off to an ivy league school to get an education and also to meet the man the kangs had decided she’d marry. they would’ve been a perfect match, both korean, both future princeton alumni, both wealthy. but hyeyeon discovered early into their relationship that he had a temper, especially when he drank, and it often ended up with his hands on her in a way that only hurt. when hyeyeon told her parents she did not want to marry the boy they’d set her up with ( jaeseok ), they told her she would do what they willed. heartbroken and terrified, hyeyeon stole all the cash she could find in her home, got the documents to change her last name, and took the first plane she could find out of her country. it’s been six years since hyeyeon bae showed up in tokyo - found by the mastermind on the streets looking confused, but getting a good feeling about her. her various proficiencies only solidified the idea in the mind of the yokai that she would make a good coordinator. now, she is a twenty-three year old master in her position, not the nervous eighteen-year-old she was when she arrived. while the abuse at her fiance’s hands and her parents utter betrayal has stuck with her and made her slow to open up and even slower to trust - she might be on the path to feeling whole again.
