I’ve been a huge Hellions fan for more than half my life so I can’t believe this never hit me before... All the girl Hellions are lacking a mother. Catseye was raised by cats; she’s noted as having had a surrogate feline mother who adopted her, but also as having looked to Emma as her surrogate mother after Emma found her. Tarot is canonically stated to have been raised by her grandmother. Roulette is mentioned as having a father and six siblings, but her mother is never mentioned. And Firestar, if she counts as a Hellion, was the daughter of a single father plus her Nana. Since it’s the case for ALL of them, I can’t help but think it’s not a coincidence, and that Emma probably deliberately targeted a lack of a mother when it came to the girl Hellions. Because mutant powers arrive at puberty, and when is a girl going to need a mother figure to turn to more?

The reason given for why the Hellions died in battle against Fitzroy and his Sentinels is that Emma didn't train them enough.

And that's odd to me.

The Hellions were meant to serve the interests of the Hellfire Club. They were going to be the next generation of assassins and enforcers. The Hellfire Club surely would have been demanding their training be done as swiftly and thoroughly as possible, and they had the resources to do it. Sure, they didn't have Shi'ar technology for a Danger Room on par with the X-Men, but that can be said for lots of super-villains and superheroes who were successfully trained into living weapons as teenagers. The Hellfire Club had plenty of money and no morals, these kids should have been like Black Widow or X-23.

So why weren't they?

I think Emma, despite herself, became attached to them. Heck, I don't "think", I know, it's crystal clear canon she loved them. And loving them means she wouldn't want to send them into danger.

So I think that while she originally started as hard and harsh as hardcore as you'd expect from the White Queen (and we can see this in some issues), after a certain point she started going easier and deliberately stalled their training to delay sending them into the field for as long as she could. Whenever Shaw or someone was like "hey we're doing this thing we need your kids for" she could just be like, oh, they're not ready yet, let's not send them, let's send someone else.

How about now? No.

Now? Nope.

Now? Not yet!

Every time, they "weren't ready yet" and so they stayed safe, with her.

And then...well, you know the rest.

Love was why she didn't train her first students.

And love is why she now trains all her others.

In the issues (281 & 282) where Fitzroy kills the Hellions, he takes many to his base, where he intends to kill them. However, the only recognizable one at his base is Tarot; besides here, there's at least 15 unnamed, never-before-seen people in Hellions costumes. Who were they?

The answer that I see usually given on websites is that they were most likely Hellions that had been recruited between this time and the last time the Hellions appeared. It makes sense on the surface, that Emma would be expanding her team more and more. But then why is it, when we see Emma's memories of the Hellions in later issues, it's always of the original team plus Beef and Bevatron, never these one-issue folks? Likewise, when Selene resurrected the Hellions, it was just the ones we knew, none of these guys. Did Emma just not care about them enough for them to make an impact on her? I doubt it. Teaching is her life, and every single student that dies under her care just DESTROYS her. We KNOW this.

The meta explanation is most likely that, yes, these were supposed to be recently recruited Hellions, and later writers either forgot about them or didn't think that it would have any emotional impact for readers to see Emma having memories of people that the readers didn't ALSO remember. But what about the in-universe explanation? What reason can there be for *Emma* to seemingly not care for the deaths of these Hellions?

My answer is that they weren't Hellions at all. The whole reason that Emma called a meeting with the X-Men at this Hellfire Club party was because there had been attempts made on her life as of late, following the death of Sebastian Shaw at the hands of an unknown assassins (hi Shinobi!) no less. She was obviously going to be VERY on her guard and take precautions...precautions like hiring a lot of Hellfire Guards to serve as decoys, donning the Hellions uniform so that if someone came to try and kill her students, they'd gun down the wrong people and the real ones could get away. That's not how things worked out, obviously, but I think that was her plan. It also explains why she'd have her meeting with the X-Men during a public party full of civilian guests rather than a secret, secluded one with top security. For the X-Men, of course, it provides assurance that they're *probably* not walking into a trap, since Emma *probably* won't do anything to them in a room full of witness (emphasis on 'probably' because if Emma really wanted to, she's clever enough to find a way and get away with it) but it also has the benefit of 'safety in numbers' for Emma's students----they can blend into the other party-goers in their fancy dresses and suits, and if something does go awry and they have to change into Hellions mode (notice how instantly they did that?) then all their decoys will do the same. Safety in numbers, again.

Of course, then Fitzroy just took the lot of them, so...yeah that didn't work out, but I don't think Emma was expecting Sentinels.

Note I said he "intends to kill them". He actually didn't get the chance to kill anyone who wasn't a named, recognizable Hellion. Why? Because the X-Men bust in, Fitzroy summons criminals from the future, 283 is a fight and Bishop shows up and the captive Not-Hellions are ignored and forgotten by the X-Men, who make no attempt whatsoever to rescue them at all...including when the building blows up because Shinobi bombed the place to kill the X-Men, who esaped. But the Not-Hellions almost 100% certainly didn't.

Nice, Shinobi. Nice, X-Men.

You're all assholes.

We could be heroes

Out of all the (dead) Hellions, I think that Jetstream was the one with the most potential/likelihood of being a hero. He had a sense of honor and ethics, as shown when he didn’t like the New Mutants being forced to join and offered them a way out. Of course, this offer came with the caveat that they had to earn it via besting one of the Hellions (himself, it turns out) but I think that also shows a certain sort of ethic as well---a sportsmanlike one, which fits with how competitive he was against Cannonball, how he looked out for his team members (stopping Catseye from jumping on Magma) and was angry when they did do the same for him (such as with Empath) This strong sense of camaraderie, and his ire when a teammate betrayed it, are also traits more in line with heroes than villains (though not exclusively, as he demonstrates)

Tying for next likely is Tarot and Catseye. Tarot feels really neutral to me, and I think maybe that comes from the way she doesn’t really make moral decisions, she just goes with what the cards tell her. She seems friendly enough, but ‘friendly’ does not mean good…as demonstrated with Catseye, who is very friendly to the New Mutants, especially Rahne, but who isn’t (in my opinion) good or evil, just innocent. I think that Catseye would run with whoever was her friends (like with the Hellions) and do what they did, so it might be easy to just plop her into a good guy group and she'd follow them, but that's not the same as a conscious moral choice. Because I don't think Sharon operates on morals and ethics and honor. She has human intelligence (and then some) but she's operated as a cat her whole life, and animals don't run on those things. It's all about survival and instinct, and while of course I'm sure she could grow and develop like any other character, it would take a long time to undo what she's known and been her whole life, and I'm talking about who they were *currently* (well, currently when they were alive *sniff*)

The big thing is altruism, the willingness to put your life on the line for strangers, which is the biggest part of super-heroing. I think that's what she'd have trouble with. I have no doubt she'd jump at saving her teammates and/or people she likes (like Rahne) (though idk if she'd risk her life for them) but I don't think she'd really understand going out of your way to save people you don't even know. Again, if someone like Emma told her too and that's what her 'friends' were doing, I think she'd go with it like she did with the Hellions, but it's not something she'd do on her own. I'd like to note right now I don't think Sharon is cold or mean or selfish, I think she's a huge sweetie-pie and an absolute precious doll and THE MOST ADORABLE EVER, just she's also, you know, a cat, and that duality---that she's this super cute person and loves her buddies and yet also has no hesitancy to kill and probably doesn't understand morals and altruism and stuff like that---is part of her appeal and makes her infinitely interesting in addition to infinitely cute and okay I'm getting off-topic so NEXT!

Roulette comes in third and final. I've noted that I think her development could lead to her becoming a much better or much worse person (or both, even) but as is, she's not someone interested in much other than causing trouble, not solving it. The most I can say for her is that she did help out Thunderbird against Wolfsbane, but as I noted with Catseye, just helping your teammates does not a superhero make. (I know I counted that with Jetstream but it was after noting his sense of honor, which is the main thing)

Beef and Bevatron don't place at all. We just don't know enough about their personalities for me to rank them anywhere, they're wild cards.

Haute Hellions

My headcanons about the body types and fashion styles of the Hellions!

Roulette: Petite, curvaceous, pinup figure. She's officially listed as 5'1 and 90 lbs but I don't think the latter can be correct, she's gonna weigh more with a body like this, even at such a compact height

As a note, I've noticed that the stats-makers consistently seem to underestimate what female characters reasonably should weigh given the way they're drawn, so I'm not surprised by this. Anyway, Jenny's probably older than her years due to her rough start in life, and her body reflects this, as the most 'developed' and 'womanly' of the Hellions girls. I think she likes this, and prefers to think that she's a sexy adult because of it, when, really, she's not, she's just a kid who had to grow up too fast but is still far from the grownup she thinks she is. You see this in how she dresses too; I picture her going for very "sexy 80s badgirl" looks, like leather jackets, leather miniskirts, etc., trying to look simultaneously glamorous/classy and like a tough punk, reflecting both the elite Hellfire Club and her gang origins. Definitely wears a lot of black and red. Probably piles on as much jewelry as she can because she wants to show she's a stylish lady living the high life now but she doesn't actually know how to pull it off and she just ends up looking like a trashy overdone mess but she doesn't realize it. She tries too hard a lot, I think. Tarot: Slender, willowy, weak-looking and probably the most physically frail of the bunch. She's listed as being 5'7 and 115 lbs and that actually seems about right. I imagine her having a long thin body and long thin limbs.

We actually do see her in civilian garb once, and it's this adorable little sailor girl getup. This was when Louise Simonson had taken over writing the New Mutants and Tarot had started to really come out of her shell, as well as losing her overt French accent, so going off that, I think that in her earlier appearances, when she was shyer, she would have been the type to hide in her clothes. She'd wear long skirts and baggy tops and thick tights, all in dark drab neutral colors, but never anything as stark as black because that would make her stick out. Once she starts getting more confident, that's when she starts going for a cuter, brighter, prettier look with a much more defined style, a sort of "innocent retro European schoolgirl gamine" type of wardrobe. I'm told that she wore a more Gothic look when King Bedlam temporarily resurrected her, but I don't have those issues and haven't seen any scans. If I were to bring her back again, I think I'd have her trying to hide in dark colors and big clothes like I imagine her originally doing, and then gradually moving towards a more confident look that has some Gothic/witchy influence, but also some of the cutesy and pretty of that sailor dress look as well. Catseye: She's listed as six feet and 120 lbs, and that's really underweight for that height, but unlike with Roulette I think that's intentional, because she was probably super-skinny when Emma found her, and her first appearance is drawn rail-thin as well

I like to think she kind of ended up the Amazon of the team, with everything she eats getting metabolized into lean, hard muscle. I think it'd make a good contrast to sexpot Roulette and skinny Tarot. As far as how she'd dress...basically, whatever they could get her into. We do see her in civilian clothing a few times: the fancy yellow dress she wore to a Hellfire Club ball, a fuzzy orange sweater with a matching long skirt and flats, and this little pink/purple ensemble that, to my shock, seems to include heels?? I'm really surprised they were able to wrangle her into some of this stuff! Of course, this was all after she'd been on the team awhile, so there's that. But in the very beginning, I think the most she'd stay in is stuff that's very comfortable and not at all restricting in any way, probably things either baggy or skimpy or that are skintight in such a way that, like her Hellions costume, it actually allows her greater freedom of movement than normal clothing. I don't think Catseye cares about color, but I think Emma would notice that she looks good in orange, yellow, and pink/purple, which is probably why those are the colors we've seen her in. Likely hates shoes too. As far as the boys go, I don't have much to say about their bodies. Thunderbird and Beef are obviously big hulks, and as for the other three, I do picture them as having differences in their bodies, but in such a way I think I could only articulate it by sketching them because it's not as overt as with the girls---they're more like three variations on one body type than three separate types. So, I'll just talk about clothes with them. Warning, I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to how guys dress. Thunderbird: IDK like typical guy clothes?? I know he goes on to be a big player in X-Force and stuff after his time with the Hellions so we probably see him in civilian clothes there. If I had to guess I'd just say he probably dresses pretty practically and plainly, but not in a way that suggests he doesn't take pride in himself. Jetstream: Casual athletic to casual nice. Gradually grows from being sure to hide his prosthetic legs in public to having no shame in wearing shorts outside. Empath: We see him in stuff like blazers over T-shirts and sleeveless sweaters over long-sleeved shirts so I guess preppy, which fits his snobby attitude Bevatron: I see him as cutesy and kind of effeminate, so tight jeans and tight shirts with fun logos, okay with showing a little midriff, always looks put together but not like it's on purpose. Beef: Anything that fits? Jerseys and tank tops and stuff. Tough looking, macho, sporty, military-surplus junk.
