SLEEP YOU FUCKTARD
hi i'm too distracted to come up with titles right now. I'm surprised I was even able to write. This is Kim's prompt (FINALLY) and it takes place in my Zombieverse, though it's kind of noncannon or in the future or something because a few months have passed and they're all back together again in this. so. um. sorry?
In the heat of the moment, time may slow and seem to come to a complete halt, but as you actually have time to stop and think, you wonder where it all went. Looking back now, Evan bit his lip and looked out through the boarded window in front of him to the snow storm surrounding their current safe house. It had been months and there still seemed to be little to no salvation from the infection that plagued more than half of the country.
Though for all they knew at this moment, it could be even more than that. It had been a few weeks since they’d had any kind of radio signal; even longer since they had actually seen another living person on the hazardous roads. The fact that the weather was getting worse and the air was getting colder didn’t help the situation at all. On a lighter note, it had cut down the number of zombies they ran into per day as well.
YOU’RE GONNA FREEZE TO DEATH, IDIOT.
Clenching his teeth to stop them from chattering, Evan shook his head and tightened the hold on his rifle, joints aching.
STOP IGNORING ME.
Through the months, Evan’s slip ups had been becoming more and more frequent, which of course led him to question himself and his sanity; even more so than before. Unfortunately he was answered by a voice, ominous and mocking. IT TOOK YOU THIS LONG TO QUESTION IT?
He did his best to ignore it and forced himself too keep it inside, not even confiding in Vincent despite how much he wished he could. They had other things to worry about.
HEY.
Evan frowned.
LISTEN TO ME.
“Shut up…”
GOOD. FOR A SECOND I THOUGHT YOU WERE MORE BRAIN DEAD THAN USUAL.
Evan’s only response was a shiver, both from the situation and the cold. He hated this. All of it. Sometimes he just wanted to curl up and just…stop. But he couldn’t. The others were in the other room, hopefully asleep, and you needed to keep watch. You needed to protect them.
THE ONLY ZOMBIES OUT THERE RIGHT NOW ARE ROTSICLES. WHICH IS WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO BE IF YOU STAY OUT LIKE THIS.
He was grinding his teeth now.
YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO FUNTION PROPPERLY IF YOU FREEZE TO DEATH, YOU KNOW. THAT WOULD JUST BE ANNOYING.
“I said shut up.”
YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD WORK? IF YOU GOT IN REEEAAAL COZI WITH ONE OF THEM. HOW ABOUT VINCE? HE’S PRACTICALLY A BEAR ANYWAY.
“Shut up.”
OR STEPH. I MEAN, YOU’VE ALREADY GOTTEN DOWN AND DIRTY WITH HER, RIGHT?
“Shut up!”
“Evan?”
He turned around, startled, to see Vince coming around the corner, looking concerned.
“..You okay? Who were you talking to?”
“Um… U-uh… Hey, Vin… No one. I was just talking to myself to pass the time…” OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. “Why are you up?”
Vince gave out a small, short laugh. “You really don’t need to keep watch right now. We haven’t seen any walkers all night. You know that.”
Evan responded with a slow nod, muttering, “But…”
“Come on… Come rest before you catch pneumonia at the very least, dude. We’re all cold. We shoved the beds together and we’re all pretty much huddled.” He gave an almost sheepish grin. “We don’t really have room to be worried about personal space right now, do we?”
“I…I guess…” Evan nodded reluctantly and relaxed a little, walking over to his friend, receiving something of a relieved smile. He followed Vince into the room where the others slept and sure enough, the beds had been shoved together, everyone huddled together with only a gap in the middle where the other boy had been, leaving room for Evan as well. Climbing back onto the mattress as carefully as possible, Vince scooted into place, waiting to help the other as he carefully set down his rifle.
“C’mon.”
Nodding, still hesitant, Evan took a step forward and stopped, having second thoughts. Waking up from the commotion and hearing Vince let out a sigh, Jeff grunted and decided that moment to sit up suddenly, grabbing the other boy by the arm. Evan made a surprised noise as he was pulled down between the two boys and Jeff rolled his eyes, settling back down.
“Go the fuck to sleep.”
Vince gave a laugh and quietly agreed, Evan huffing in response. Finally letting himself relax, he laid back, his mind instantly recognizing the action and beginning to slip. Though he still fought against it, the sudden comfort and warmth caused him to swiftly slip into unconsciousness, a low chuckle being heard in the back of his mind.
WELL…I GUESS THIS WORKS.
One more night, they were safe.
One more night, it was quiet.
For the first night in months, the six of them all slept soundly.
