she cannot begin to entertain the idea of losing bonnie. like okay, she and elena were closer friends for longer but bonnie is her person. bonnie is her rock. bonnie is one of the great loves of her life. living in a world without bonnie bennett in it???? is not something she ever wants to experience again. because she’s ‘been there done that’ one too many times already and it never gets easier.
which is also to say, she’s RIDICULOUSLY overprotective of bonnie, especially as the years go on. especially after the whole expression / silas thing, and the anchor thing, and the constantly losing her powers thing, and the kai thing
the fact that bonnie is friends with damon really bugs her. not in a way that she’ll ever actually voice, because she’s very much supposed to be “over” the Thing with damon ( and in a lot of ways she IS ) but she gets why elena loves him, elena always somehow manages to find the most broken people to love ( it’s why she imagines elena stayed her friend for so long ) but bonnie was always supposed to be the like ‘oh i’ll hex anyone that comes near you’ friend, and though she doesn’t blame her at all for her friendship with damon, it bugs her a little bit and for that she’ll always feel guilty ( bc bonnie deserves a friend like him, and objectively speaking they’re GOOD as friends )
bonnie 100% deserved to win prom queen and care i 150% elated for her for winning. because as much as caroline has always competed with elena for the limelight, she’s also come to realize that while they were both struggling for it, bonnie’s always kinda ended up in the shadows. and she doesn’t deserve that in the slightest. she’s bonnie and she went from being sweet and innocent and gentle to having to be tough and hardened and hurt over and over and god damn it she DESERVES to wear a little tiara and a sash and have matt donovan --- all around boy next door --- twirl her around the dancefloor for a bit
when they were little, and bonnie’s mom was gone and her dad had all but kinda disappeared from her life, they’d have sleepovers a lot and at some point, liz would be called into work and bill would be away as he usually was and it would just be them sitting beneath the sheets with a flashlight telling stories or reading books and being one another’s company when they really didn’t have anyone else. if it wasn’t for bonnie, she’s not really sure she could have gotten through her childhood that easily.
