“While doing research for my book ‘A Secret History of Memphis Hoodoo: Conjurers, Rootworkers & Spirituals’ I discovered secrets behind a number of Memphis landmarks and stories that I had never been told growing up in Memphis.”
“The area of Beale, Lindy, Turly & Martin were home to a number of settlements where Africans and African-Americans were housed. The settlements went by names such as ‘Hell’s Half Acre’ and ‘Rotten Row’. Rotten Row became a popular spot for police to confiscate mojo bags and rootworking artifacts from residents who were arrested for simply being ‘unemployed’. In one case police arrested a man and destroyed his mojo ‘hand’ despite his protest that the bag was providing protection from his enemies.” -Tony Kail
Lander to Thermopolis to Hell's Half Acre to River's Edge Campground - Evansville, WY
We took the scenic route from Lander to Casper today. We drove up the Wind River Canyon, which winds along the Bighorn River (just a bit confusing) and to the city of Thermopolis.
We stopped for breakfast at a local cafe - where I had one of the biggest pancakes I have ever seen! I ordered TWO without knowing how big they were - we ended up taking 1 1/2 of them home with us!
After breakfast, we headed over to Hot Springs State Park - entrance was free. We drove the scenic loop through the park:
First stop was the Smoky Row Cemetery.
It was very warm, but this little guy was still doing a little sunbathing next to the cemetery.
We found the bison herd, a few babies in the crowd.
Beautiful buck in the Spirit Bowl on Buffalo Pasture Road.
We stopped at White Sulphur Springs to check it out:
Next stop was the Swinging Bridge and the Terrace Walk:
Fun and interesting stop, definitely worth the extra miles!
We also made a quick stop at the pull off for Hell's Half Acre:
Another interesting spot - awesome landscape and right next to the highway. It looked like it had been closed due to vandalism - fencing all along the rim and the road to a picnic area was closed.
We arrived in Casper, where we had changed our plans due to the prediction of 100+ temperatures during our stay. We decided to stay at a campground with hook-ups so that we could have AC - we had been too hot and miserable in Lander. Since it is 100+ today, I think we made a good decision!
We got all set up and decided to head for a local brewery, of course!
Cheers from Oil City!
Just for you to know.. I’m still working on ‘hells half acre’… And yes… First draft on paper and then typed…
