How would I make my writing more engaging to the reader? My SO described my writing more like a police blotter. Informative but not engaging.

Awesome way to work around creative block!
Keep an inspiration diary. Write down every idea and rouge concept, scribble a thumbnail drawing when you have an idea, and tape cool pictures in it. Ideally, it should look messy and unkempt, with unrealized potential inside. It doesn't have to be a book. You could just as easily have a folder on your computer or a section of your bookmarks labeled "Inspiration" filled with the coolest things you can find.I just inspired myself.
You could listen to a popular song and pretend it’s a song from a musical, then think about what kind of character would be singing it and what events would cause them to sing that song.

Sketch when travelling
When you're going somewhere by train/tram/bus/whatever, sketch what you see passing by. It can be people, houses, cars, or anything else. It's a good practice because a.you get a lot of models and b.you need to work quick.
Charcoal on construction paper
Find an interesting subject and draw it on charcoal with colored construction paper. It gives the subject a more unique view.
Maybe you can get a newspaper and just start scribbling on it... you know, glasses, beards, moustaches, crazy hats, fishes, or things like that. Then invent a story for them. It usually helps me...
