Even now, the understanding is not always practiced. We learn in our recovery that we are all equal in our ability to be human. Recovery from our disease does not free us from being human. It gives us a way of life to deal with this fact. For there to be serenity and peace in our lives, we have to learn to accept our humanness. If people act as we think they shouldn't, then we have to change the way we think. It is just that simple. The acceptance we seek goes beyond things and events. The Serenity Prayer also refers to people as well as things. We are really asking our Higher Power to accept people as they are. We can't change them. "Today, I'll remember to live and let live. "A conversation with my Son Gavin while driving him to school this morning. Gavin says, "Mom, I used to be afraid of "Code Red" at school but now I am not anymore. I ask, "What does "Code Red" mean?" Gavin says, "A school shooter" "He then tells me that after he finishes big exams he imagines if a school shooter comes in the school what he would do to hide and how one of his teachers keeps a baseball bat in the room just in case this happens." "He says, his teacher wants the biggest and strongest kid to hide behind the door and bash the shooter's head in." We both started discussing the horrible tragedy that happened at the Ft. Lauderdale airport last week and and Gavin mentioned someone hiding under a dead person at the Sandy Hook Shooting years ago.
