Whats it all about? (Part 1)
What is Social Prescribing?
Doctor, Doctor, I think im suffering from Deja Vu!
Didn’t I see you yesterday? (Que canned laughter!)
Although this is a silly joke, to the NHS this is a very real problem. Issues that can often been solved just by social interaction or physical and mental stimulation (Social Prescribing).
Social prescribing is a way of linking patients in primary care with sources of support within the community. It provides GPs with a non-medical referral option that can operate alongside existing treatments to improve health and well-being.
Examples of this in the news most recently, are GP’s referring patients to participate in local park runs, encouraging social interaction, physical and mental well being.
Only 10% of UK’s GP’s are not currently involved in social prescribing and on a small trial scheme in Rotherham inpatient admissions to hospital care services were reduced by as much as 21%. That will be saving their local NHS potentially £415,000 in its first year alone.
Next time we will discuss what social prescribing looks like, where to go and how to access it.
