IDW Publishing and Viz Media are collaborating on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto crossover comic series with four issues. Caleb Goellner (Sonic the Hedgehog) is writing the comic, Hendry Prasetya (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) is drawing, Raúl Angulo is coloring, and Ed Dukeshire is lettering. Jorge Jiménez and Prasetya drew the cover art for issue #1, which will ship on November 13, 2024.

Synopsis

It's the coolest ninja matchup you could have ever dreamed of, had you dared! The Heroes in a Half-Shell meet the host of the Nine-Tailed Fox in the crossover everyone will be talking about. When teenage reporter April O'Neil has a clandestine meeting with Tsunade, the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village, it garners the attention of Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi. They aren't the only ones who are wondering what the two women were discussing, though. The sinister Foot Clan have their own interest in April's visit, as they think she might hold the valuable information on mutation research being conducted by the scientist Baxter Stockman. With April caught between the forces of the Hidden Leaf Village and the Foot Clan, it can't be long before the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show up to lend her a hand!

TMNT: BATTLE NEXUS #5

As Michelangelo refuses to fight his best friend, the multiverse is about to be destroyed in the finale of this saga.

RATING: GOOD

This issue was scripted by Erik Burnham and I actually asked him a few questions in preparation for an upcoming video... but I'll discuss some of that in the spoilers section.

The art in this issue was made by Ben Bates (including some colors), and my understanding is that he wasn't the first choice... but I am glad it was him, because this story reminds me of the Bebop and Rocksteady miniseries (which also had Savanti Romero in them).

Now, there is one problem I have with the way Slash was brought back to life, and that is that it was assumed that Slash survived a nuclear blast... but he was the bomb. So how did he exactly survive exploding... I am not sure. Erik implied there was magic involved... but the script only mentions him ending up at the Battle Nexus, even before getting discovered by Savanti, so I am not sure how that could work.

The rest of the story is actually a good ending for this saga (although there are some timeline-altering implications).

There is a backup short story pitting the 2003 and 2012 turtles against each other that the pirates forgot to include (but don't worry, it is present in the kindle version and I'll discuss it in the spoiler section).

Overall, I think this was a nice experiment, and I'd like to see more interactions between iterations (even if that results in volatile situations).

So far, the IDW turtles interacted with one counterpart from each universe (Archie, Rise, and 2003). In this issue it was finally revealed that the Mikey from another universe was from the future of the SMA/87 universe. It is actually not the last ronin, but he is ronin-like (more about this in the upcoming video).

Don't worry, he'll show up in the SMA comic soon.

As I predicted, the last council member was Splinter. Of course, it is hard to give him a name. He may or may not be the original Splinter depending on how the volume 4 story ends (if it ever ends). But what I find brilliant here is that all four members of the council were present in the 2014 annual, back when Big Mama didn't even exist yet. And because that part of the comic was in black and white, you couldn't tell that Splinter was different from the rest.

And yes, Ninjara is now part of the IDW universe, just as Raph and Alopex were starting to get closer again. We'll see how that goes.

And while there were no champions of the Battle Nexus in this story (given how corrupt the tournament was), there was a champion in the Mister Ogg competition: Ice Cream Kitty.

For some people this means that the 2012 won, but Mister Ogg clearly named Kitty the champion (someone who wasn't even in the competition).

Other surprises in this story come from the climax. Savanti Romero is kind of dead, but his head was sucked by a fissure, along with many Bebops and Rocksteadys... AND THE ORIGINAL SHREDDER. Now, this Shredder was supposed to go back to the moment before his death, so it is possible that this created an alternate Mirage timeline where Shredder never returned. We'll see if this bit is used in the future. But I wouldn't be surprised if Savanti returns from the death as well.
