Just putting this on here because it's been bothering me: the real reason Henry (Lane Kim's first love interest) broke it off with her and disappeared is because the actor Eddie Chin got hired to be on That 80s Show (the first short-lived That 70s Show spinoff) and had to leave. The spinoff didn't last and they never brought him back: Chin is probably best known these days for playing the dad on Alexa and Katie, a Netflix kids show.
Show-wise, Henry broke it off with Lane because he was sick of her jerking him around and hiding him from her mom when they could have openly dated. Lane avoided letting her mom know about him because she was afraid that if she approved of him, he would no longer be attracted to him anymore. The reason things didn't work out is entirely on Lane, not Henry or her mother.
Dave comes around the next year and their relationship seems to revolve almost entirely around manipulating Mama Kim into letting them go on a single date. We all know this fandom believes Dave qualifies for sainthood because he pretended to read the Bible once, but since this is a regular Tuesday night in April in the Bible Belt I'm not sure either Mama Kim or Lane was as impressed with it as Dave's devotees are. At any rate, Lane and Dave seems to enjoy the subterfuge, but I don't think that means they should have gotten married (since we never hear anything about Dave again after the topic comes up, I'm guessing he agreed).
The fandom hates Zach for not being Saint Dave, but this is the only relationship that Lane ever had that wasn't based on lies and deception and her mother also accepted him (and their relationship) for what it was. Like it or not, that's actually a positive development in her relationship patterns (something we know ASP will never allow Rory to enjoy). The relationship largely exists outside of the scope of Mama Kim's approval, and that is why it succeeds.
