Prompt 5 - Grandson
@wolfstarmicrofic July 5, word count 597
Previous part First part
Remus woke the next morning feeling oddly lonely. He’d dreamt of Sirius. It had been such a vivid dream that Remus had expected to find Sirius in bed with him. Remus moved his hand to the spot he’d dreamt Sirius was in and was shocked to find it warm. But Sirius hadn’t slept there, had he? He decided to put the thought out of his head and get up. He was hungry, and the smell of breakfast was wafting into his little room.
“Good morning, Remus dear. Did you sleep well?” Effie asked as she bustled in and out of the kitchen. Remus had thought that all Lords and Ladies had their own cooks to do the cooking for them, but Effie seemed to be doing everything.
“Oh, don’t mind Effie, love. She refuses to get a cook. She says she enjoys cooking too much to let someone else do it. Though I can’t complain as she makes the best food I’ve ever tasted,” Eleanor told him. “When Henry and I were the masters of this house, we had two cooks. They were very upset when Effie let them go.” Remus listened with interest. It was the least he could do after the way they had welcomed him into their home. “Then my grandson came along. Oh, you can’t imagine the joy his birth brought the family. The entire estate came up to the manor to welcome their new little master into the world, and what a joy he’s been. The kindest boy you’ve ever met. Then this little scamp turned up and turned the entire house upside down,” Eleanor smiled fondly over Remus’s shoulder at Sirius as he entered the room, stretching his arms high above his head.
“You love me, Ellie, and you know it.”
“Scamp,”
“Crone,”
“Come here, and I’ll put you over my knee, boy.”
“Promises, promises,” Sirius chuckled, bending low to kiss the older woman on her cheek. “Oh, Ellie, if I were only ten years older,” Eleanor said, swatting him away.
“Turned the house completely upside down. But James did finally have a friend. The other boys in the village were too scared to play with him. I’ve no idea why he and Fleamont haven’t a wicked bone in their bodies. Even if James had lost an arm, no harm would have come to them, but oh well, that’s the way things happened and that’s that.” She shook her head sadly. “Then once this one got a hug off Effie, that was it. We couldn’t get rid of him. Not that we wanted to,” Eleanor beamed at Sirius.
“Breakfast’s ready. Where’s James?” Effie announced, looking to Sirius for her answer. He shrugged his shoulders. “Well, was he still in bed when you got up?” Sirius shuffled his feet nervously.
“I didn’t sleep in James’s bed last night,” he admitted, and Remus became more confused than he had been. It seemed to be a normal thing that Sirius slept in James’s bed, enough that it was expected. Remus felt a sudden surge of jealousy, but he had no idea what for.
“Well, where did you sleep then?” Effie asked, her brow furrowed.
“Elsewhere,” Sirius croaked. Effie and Eleanor both looked at Remus. Remus looked away, his cheeks flushing.
“Excellent! Breakfast!” James boomed as he strode in, sat down and began piling food on his plate. It was enough to take the attention off Remus, and the dining room became a cacophony of happy chatter and eating. Remus kept stealing glances at Sirius while he ate, but Sirius didn’t look at him once.

James Potter knew more about muggles than we give him credit for.
Welcome to my #TedTalk.
When reading fanfiction, I always see James Potter not knowing anything about muggles, or what he has learned about muggles comes from Sirus. While I love reading these things, I have always thought James would know more about muggles.
I thought this long before Pottermore/wizardingworld but never had anything to say one way or the other why I thought this.
And you might be thinking "LLLTR the Weasleys were fine with muggles - Arthur loved them! Ron did not have vast muggle knowledge."
I am not saying James was a muggle expert. However, the Burrow is situated away from people. Godric's Hollow is a town. A town with a pub, a church, and a post office. People know each other in a town. Even if it is from taking a walk outside, they know who their neighbors are, and their kids.
Now, you might be saying "LLLTR the Potters's house was probably hidden from people- like Grimold's place!"
To that, I say that Black family would want nothing to do with their neighbors - especially muggles. But a family who has a long history of sharing magical cures with muggles would be interacting with them. Linfred would give potions to muggles and his son Hardwin married Iolanthe Peverell - who brought the Potter family to Godric's Hollow.
When I first read the Potter Family part on Pottermore I was like yes, James was exposed to muggles throughout his life!
Now what makes me say this, besides the part about Linfred? These lines about Henry Potter, James' Grandfather:
Henry caused a minor stir when he publicly condemned then Minister for Magic, Archer Evermonde, who had forbidden the magical community to help Muggles waging the First World War. His outspokenness on behalf of the Muggle community was also a strong contributing factor in the family’s exclusion from the ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’.
Henry Potter was outspoken on behalf of the muggle community. Why would he do this? Was Henry Potter a wizard who thought that WWI was bad and that it needed to end - or did Henry Potter know people personally who were dying in the war. Was it his neighbor's kids who had known his son Fleamont? Was he consoling his neighbor at the local Godric's Hollow Pub the night they held a bodyless funeral for his neighbor's son? Was it seeing his community, that was magical and muggle-struck by loss.
Advocacy comes from a place of empathy.
And how could Henry let his community of Godric's Hollow, where his family had been for generations, suffer without support?
Furthermore, James was not a shy child. If James was secluded away from kids his own age, he would not be the person we saw in Snape's memory on the train. James Potter had interacted with kids his own age and his parents were older. He was not hanging out with his parent's friends' kids. He was hanging out with the local muggles kids. Yes, James Potter learned about magic at home from his parents. But James Potter was a kid who knew how to interact with others his own age.
James Potter interacted with muggles in his hometown. He was not ignorant of the muggle ways, and this is something that connected him and Lily.
Thank you for coming to my #TedTalk
Happy birthday, James!
In your honour, I'll share a scene from the start of I solemnly swear. When James meets Sirius for the first time <3
‘What’s going on?’ Stopping in his tracks, James stared as he took in all the people assembled at the bottom of the stairs. ‘You’re not all coming to Kings’ Cross?’
‘Those two losers aren’t,’ agreed Carl, nodding to his best friends, Caradoc Dearborn and Robert McGonagall, ‘but they thought they’d at least drop by to wish you good luck.’
‘I am not wishing him luck,’ grinned Robert, ‘I am here to elicit a solemn promise that you’ll give my sister hell.’
‘James doesn’t give people hell. Do you, darling?’
His mother was beaming at him as he finally continued making his way downstairs.
Carl’s snort was quickly masqueraded as a cough, but his father laughed: ‘I am sorry, wife, but here, I have to disagree with you.’
Ignoring the playful bickering between his parents, Sarah—already dressed in her training gear—walked over and pulled him into a hug:
‘I am afraid I can’t make it either, Jamie… I am going to miss you so much!’
She looked rather miserable once he pulled free.
‘It’s mid-season, I know,’ reassured James. He’d never expected her to find the time to come. ‘Just win the league, and we’ll call it even.’
‘Easy,’ she smiled, ruffling his hair.
‘Rob’s still waiting for your promise,’ joked Caradoc once Sarah had left them.
‘I solemnly swear to create plenty of headaches for your sister,’ replied James seriously, saluting Robert.
‘Rob, you have no mercy,’ Carl shook his head, ‘James has no idea what he’s just promised.’
‘What?’
‘Minerva is strict.’
‘I know that.’
‘No, you don’t,’ agreed Caradoc, smiling widely. ‘We had her as a teacher in our final years at Hogwarts, and you’d think she’d be an easy target, new and all, but no. Fu- fudging terrifying.’
‘Wait, you had your sister as your teacher?’
Robert grimaced as Caradoc and Carl laughed.
‘How did that work?’
‘Not well,’ smirked Carl with a sideways glance at his friend.
‘Do you know what’s not going to work well?’ asked Euphemia. ‘Being late for your train.’
After that, everything became a blur of well-wishes, goodbyes, swishing cloaks and limbs. James could barely contain his excitement in the midst of all the chaos. Finally, finally, finally, he was going to Hogwarts.
A scarlet steam engine next to a platform packed with people awaited him at the other side of the barriers between platform nine and ten. A sign overhead said Hogwarts Express, 11 o’clock. Turning to look behind him, James saw a wrought-iron archway where the ticketbox had been, with the words Platform Nine and Three-Quarters.
Smoke from the engine drifted over the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of every colour wound here and there between their legs. Owls hooted to each other in a disgruntled sort of way over the babble and the scraping of heavy trunks.
‘James,’ his mother held out her hand.
‘Please,’ she continued, clearly noticing that there were few things James wanted less in that moment than to be seen by his future classmates holding his mother’s hand. ‘So we don’t lose you.’
Settling on a compromise, he took his grandfather’s arm instead. That way, he could always say it was Henry who needed assistance. As they started moving towards the train, James decided that this was indeed partly true, as he helped his grandfather avoid tripping and falling over a couple of cats.
The first few carriages were already packed with students, some hanging out the window to talk to their families, some fighting over seats. In the end, Carl and James found an empty compartment, though there was already one other trunk in the luggage rack.
Carl helped hoist James’ own trunk, and then the two of them re-emerged on the platform.
‘Oh darling, we’re going to miss you so much,’ his mother engulfed him in a near suffocating hug.
‘You’ve got your money? Good. Good. … Okay, well, Jim, I guess this is goodbye for now. … Be good.’
James grinned up at his father, always a little awkward, and never one for goodbyes.
‘We’ll see you at Christmas, love, and in the meantime, you can write as much as you want to.’
‘He won’t have time to write, aunt E,’ scoffed Carl before pulling James into a hug. ‘Take care, mate. Don’t get into duels you can’t win.’
‘At first,’ agreed Fleamont, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. ‘Need to build up a reputation to start with… but if you win every duel you enter…’
‘I am not challenging myself enough, yeah I know,’ replied James.
‘And remember that—’
‘The best opponent is a disarmed opponent,’ recited James faithfully. ‘I know.’
‘You’ve taught him well, son,’ said Henry, ‘but now it’s time for James to go out and learn his own lessons.’
Despite the light tone, James felt a pang of pain as he noticed how forlorn his grandfather appeared, despite his best effort.
‘Don’t worry about this old man,’ murmured Henry as James gave him a second hug.
‘I’ll write lots,’ promised James, pressed into his grandfather’s warm chest.
‘I hope not.’ A bushy frown became discernible amidst the wrinkles as James looked up into the kindest face he knew. ‘Carl’s right. I hope you’ll be far too busy to worry about us old folk. Just write a letter now and then, so we don’t forget you exist. Us elderly have very frail minds.’
‘Yeah, I’ve been worried about Carl’s memory of late,’ teased James to an “oi!” from Carl, who’d turned thirty the previous Saturday.
‘Okay, bye!’
There wasn’t much more to say. And yet, for a moment, James wished he wasn’t going anywhere at all. He turned quickly, so as to not prolong the painful departure.
Then, as he boarded the train, a shrill voice cried out:
‘SIRIUS! You did this!’
A boy about his age, with black hair and grey eyes, looked over James’ head with an expression of mild interest. James turned to see a pale-faced, blonde, haughty-looking teenager march up towards them, her face covered with pimples.
‘Did what?’
‘This!’ she shrieked, gesturing towards her face—her pimples, most likely.
‘Mate, you shouldn’t have ruined her hair like that…’ offered James, stepping to the side to get a view of them both. And, just in case the argument turned into a duel.
The boy’s mask slipped for the briefest of seconds, and his lips twitched.
‘You’d think someone was behind that, wouldn’t you? Nah, that hair’s natural. As is the rest.’
The girl spluttered, her cheeks now pink, her eyes flashing dangerously. Then something came over her. She drew herself up, her face settled into a bored expression, not too different from that of the boy’s.
Without another word, she spun around and stalked away.
‘Charming as always,’ the boy muttered.
The train jerked, and James realised it was departing. He’d half entertained the idea of making it over to the compartment, to have a final chance to wave goodbye to his family, but now, that didn’t seem all that important.
‘I am James,’ he said, holding out a hand. ‘James Potter.’
‘Sirius Black,’ grinned the boy, taking his hand.
Ch1, S3: James Potter
‘This one’s for you, love.’
Euphemia Potter held out a thick envelope with his name written in green ink on the front with a meaningful look. James snatched it from her. Then, catching himself, he asked: ‘Which owl?’
There were currently three owls sitting at the kitchen counter. He recognised the paper-owl by the small leather pouch, and knew that one was there to deliver the daily prophet to his parents. To its right sat a long-eared owl, it’s fierce orange eyes surveying the kitchen sternly, and to its left was a barn owl, it’s dark eyes and heart-shaped face making it look more curious than its two colleagues.
His mother pointed to the long-eared owl.
‘Thank you,’ James addressed the Hogwarts delivery owl solemnly.
It gave him a short, approving stare before ruffling its feathers importantly. A moment after, it took off through the window, followed by the two others.
But James’ attention was already on the two thick, heavy, yellowish pieces of parchment inside the envelope, his heart hammering in his chest. This was it! This was his Hogwarts letter. He could barely believe his own eyes.
yknow whats really sad about james and lily dying? other then the fact that they were twenty one and left an infant son behind, they had no family at their funerals, and no family to arrange their funerals.
Petunia wasn't at Lily's funeral; she didn't even attend James and Lily's wedding and threw away the birth annoucement for Harry Lily sent her in the post. So obviously Vernon and Dudley weren't there either, and by then Lily and Petunia's parents had both died, so ofc they weren't present either.
James is so sad as well; he was the only son of Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, he was born late into their lives after they struggled to have children for many years so he didn't have any older or younger siblings. He had relatives called Charlus and Dorea Potter, who had one son and we can assume that Charlus was either Fleamont's brother or cousin, or his father Henry's brother/cousin. Either way, Charlus, Dorea and their son were dead by 1977, and Fleamont and Euphemia both died within hours of each other shortly after Lily and James got married in 1979. We don't know when Henry Potter (Fleamont's father, James' grandfather and Harry's great grandfather) was born, but it's assumed he's the same age as Dumbledore, but he had also died by 1981. We can assume his wife was also deceased by then.
It's sad because Lily had family - a sister, a brother-in-law and a nephew in Surrey. Godric's Hollow is in Lavenham in Suffolk, 106 miles from Surrey, and the driving time is approximlately 2 hours and 21 minutes. They just simply chose not to attend Lily's funeral - unlike James, Lily had family who could have attended, but didn't. Harry was, we can assume, locked in the cupboard under the stairs.
James had no family to attend his funeral, and we know he was deeply loved by his parents - Fleamont and Euphemia spoiled him rotten due to him being their only child, which contributed to the arrogant nature he had at Hogwarts. We can assume that Henry and his wife, and Charlus, Dorea and their son also adored and treasured James beyond belief. If they had been alive, they would have attended the funeral and arranged the whole thing. James had family who deeply loved him and would have attended the funeral but they'd all died by then.
And who was left to arrange their funeral? We know it was in Godric's Hollow and that's where they're buried, in the adjoining church graveyard (do wizards not have their own graveyards? I kinda thought they did). It was probably the Ministry that arranged it - they would have focused on Harry, the boy who lived and who ended the war, and not the two people who tragically died in the process. Dumbledore, being the head of the Order of the Phoenix, could have arranged it as well, seeing as he was close to Lily and James and had a lot of power in the wizarding world. Another possiablity - Remus! After seeing Sirius off to Azkaban for killing twelve Muggles, Peter and betraying James and Lily, hearing about Peter dying (supposedly) and James and Lily dying, and being one of James and Lily's best friends, he could have arranged their funeral as well. Even if there was no body except a finger to be found after Peter was 'murdered' Remus probably would have had a hand in helping Peter's mother arrange a memorial service for her son.
The Potter family just breaks my heart jesus fucking christ :(
Alecart Manor or Potter Manor was the ancestral home of the English side of the Potter family until it was destroyed the 31st of October 1981 by Lord Voldemort. It housed countless generations of the British side of the family after the division in the Indian and English branch.
It ended up being inherited by Henry Potter, who was a member of the Indian side of the family, after the last member of the English branch died unexpectedly without a wife or children to inherit. There he raised, alongside his wife Meera, their two sons: Fleamont and Charlus. Both of them later had their own kids, but the younger decided to stay on one of the Black properties of his wife's family.
A Decent Bloke
"Alright, Evans?" A low voice whispered in her ear, causing Lily Evans to jump in her seat and let out a yelp.
"Oh quiet, Evans, this is a library," James Potter smiled down at Lily, his hands in his pockets.
Lily shot him a withering look. "Potter, can't you see I'm trying to work here? What do you want?"
Ignoring her harsh tone, James casually plopped down in the seat beside her. "I heard you muttering about legislative agendas and Ministerial decrees. Figured you could use a hand."
