And it was sad because we both miss my parents, who were the real adults in the family who made shit happen and got us all together, especially on holidays, and how things were when they were here. But we powered through it, and we fortunately had plenty of legumes and vegetables to help us with this. Despite 'not feeling well', my grandmother managed to make rice, habichuelas, okra, and mushrooms, all things that she knows I like to eat. My grandmother can be real high maintenance at times, and she isn't always easy to deal with. But I'm grateful that she at least tries to take care of me when she can.
While we were eating my grandmother told me that her brother used to grow his own cilantro, oregano, and some other herbs, and that he would always send some of it home with her when she visited him, and that she would give it to my mother, because she apparently knew how to dry and preserve them for near-future use. I never would have guessed that my mom did anything like this, but I can also totally see it. So, that sort of made today worth it.
